...where I was absolutely convinced and Gp said absolutely couldn't be.....

she is now peeling

round the nose she has a powdery peel.
All the pads of her fingers have peeled off .

Looks like I was right ...unless anyone can give me an alternative explaination as to why she is peeling 10 days after having all the symptoms of Scarlet Fever

SMS- It didn't sound like Kawasaki to me at the time or else I really would have put a rocket up your arse to get her admitted!

Bronze · 16/06/2008 22:06

Can you not ask to see a different doctor?

Have come across kawasaki before and the peeling skin was the symptom that brought child in. I have to stress that the child had no ongoing problems at all afterwards. Just a thought but always best to have RL review by GP

SlightlyMadSweet · 16/06/2008 22:10

I did half consider Kawasaki when she was first ill, having rememeber Enid's(?) thread - especially when her nose started peeling.

She fits SF more than Kawasaki's. Her temp wasn't high enough or prolonged enough for Kawasaki's based on what I have read. She was also only really poorly in herself for about 2 days and even then she only looked vaguely poorly when she was feverish (i.e. between Calpol/nurofen).

So what do you reckon - back to same GP as he has history pr different GP for a second opinion/as a result of reduced confidence.

She may actually have a new rash appeared today on teh inside of her wrist. I couldn't look at it properly though as she wouldn't let me. It may just be a graze where she has squeezed her hand through her cot bars or someting similar. I will try and look properly tomorrow.

SMS-They can get a slightly darker rash for several weeks after SF in the creases of skin at the armpits, groin etc. DS had this-there is a name for it`I think but can't remember what it is!
I would take her to a different GP-the other one may dog his heels in and insist on standing by his original opinion.

emma1977 · 16/06/2008 22:18

I would probably be inclined to see someone different.

Tiggiwinkle · 16/06/2008 22:19

dig even!

They're called pastia lines

lucykate · 16/06/2008 22:21

my ds had a sore throat a couple of months ago, followed by a peeling rash and at the same time i also mysteriously had my first ever bout of tonsillitis. gp didn't diagnose it as scarlet fever even though there had already been 2 confirmed cases at ds's nursery!

AbstractMouse · 16/06/2008 22:26

I thought my dd had scarlet fever, googled the rash etc, she had loads of sympoms including a funny looking tongue. Gp did the obligatory virus thing, she then developed impetigo, which is common with sf, took her back and he then gave her oral ab's for that. She did have the odd peeling skin thing awhile later but didn't last long.

Would always trust your instincts, and I would go to a different dr about this issue, as the original one might be a bit defensive?

SlightlyMadSweet · 16/06/2008 22:40

But there is nothing worth going back for - symptomatic wise ATM. I am not particularly worried about her ATM. If I go back I will be saying "I have been told to get a urine check cos she has probably had SF". I just don't know if I have the confidence to go back again, and imply their job again.

She looks as though she has dipped her fingers in PVA.
Where she has peeled she looks like she has been in the bath too long.
It isn't hurting her. I know nothing can be done about it.

I had an illness with a rash followed by peeling on the palms of my hand and soles of my feet. Never did find out what was wrong. Perhaps I had SF.

SlightlyMadSweet · 16/06/2008 22:49

OK.

Now I feel as though I am over dramatising.

Now I feel as if I have just diagnised everyone on MN who has ever had peeling skin with SF.

Sorry.

HI SMS, I haven't read the whole thread but we went through almost the exact same thing with DS last year.

It started as a fever and a fine, threadlike rash starting on his face and running down his trunk then out to his fingers and toes. He was only really unwell for a few days and then about a week later his fingers and toes started to peel. I took him to the GP several times and asked about both SF and Kawasaki. GP decided not SF as no sore throat or strawberry tongue (also scarlet fever rash tends to be worse in creases of body which DS did not have) and not Kawasaki because he wouldn't have been MUCH MUCH sicker.

My dad who is a paediatrician was visiting at the time also saw him and said it was possibly slapped cheek or otherwise some other non-specific virus. His skin peeled for a while but otherwise he was absolutely fine. The truth is they don't always know - doesn't make them an arse. If your DD is better now why go back to GP?

Sugarmagnolia · 17/06/2008 08:19

Oh, and by the way, the peeling skin thing didn't really bother him and didn't spread much past the fingers and toes so hopefully your dd won't be too bad with it.

lucykate · 17/06/2008 08:26

regardless of whether it is or isn't sf, how is she now? is she getting better?

Tiggiwinkle · 17/06/2008 09:06

SMS-it is the urine test you need to go back for, about two weeks after she had the infection. It is really important. If you are reluctant to take her back, do as I suggested earlier in the thread and buy some urine test sticks-you can order them online.

I agree re the urine test.I had post strep complications and have had kidney failure and heart problems.V important to jeep an eye on her post infection

pofaced · 17/06/2008 09:47

I think I posted in response to your earlier thread: my family experienced Scarlet Fever in very different ways.

All of my DDs had SF and were given anti-biotics. DD2 also peeled and I went back to GP who agreed she seemed "toxic"! She recommended bathing her in Emulsifying ointment: dissolve a large desert/ serving spoon of it under hot tap as you run the bath. After the bath rub more into her skin. The ointment is very thick so keep it somewhere warm tomake it more spreadable (eg airing cupboard).
She then got ill again and we were referred to a paediatrician specialising in contagious diseases who put her on a 3 month course of Antibiotics, explaining that different people react to strep infection in different ways: DDs 1 & 3 were a bit under the weather for a week while DD2 was unwell for 3 months and then 3 months abs so that's 6 months in total!

Go back to your GP!!

BTW, 2.5 years on, DD2 has just had another nasty strep infection...

SlightlyMadSweet · 17/06/2008 12:09

But if GP won't acknowledge it is/was/may have been a step infection it just feels pointless.

She seems fine now.

The patch on her wrist just seems to be dry scaley skin. She has it on one of her cheeks too...and GP saw that at first appointment.
