Is it just me or are other people's children always ill?

DS1 is 3 years and DS2 is 5 months. They are/were both exclusively breast-fed and despite that, one of the two is always ill! So much for that myth! If it's not an ear infection it's a high temperature. We live in Damascus in Syria where I think there is a higher incident of lurgies. Or is it like this in England too? I am so bored of this! We are moving back to London in the autumn - will it be better there I wonder????

Mine were the same for months despite also being exclusivly bf for the recommended 6 months and still bfing them now at nearly 4 and 2 years.

Tummy bug/chest infection/cold/cough then tummy bug again!!

Drives me nuts!!

Both my dses were like that, but now they're 4 and 7 they are hardly ever ill - think they got it all over with when they were younger!

Ds1 unusually had several days off school this year - one because of a bad bump on his head, and another due to some virusy thing (I can't even remember what it was now, just remember a doctor's trip and him saying to keep him off for the rest of the week to let him recover...) but that has been the first major time off from school since he started, and he's in Year 2!

My son is rarely ill, but everyone else's kids seem to always have some illness or other. DS wasn't breastfed, but I don't personally think that makes much difference if there are germs about.

Thanks girls. I think it's actually to do with having a second child. My first son was never ever ill but of course he now brings things back from nursery...
It's awful at the time but I find I forget about it quite quickly! That's the beauty of children I guess!

Yes, it seems this way to me too, though interestingly I find the most ill children are the ones of my friends in Norway, not sure if that's because scandinavians tend to complain more when feeling a bit sniffly or something!!

DS not been ill since reception (is in Y2). DD has had 2 days off nursery this year - one with high temp etc, one because she went over the handlebars of her bike and messed her nose and mouth up. She has also been sick once but that was a Friday evening. They both seem to have cold now, although not sure with DS because he has hay fever anyway, DD's is just a snotty nose and in no way affecting her. I OTOH have sinusitis and a barking cough.

Agree with rubberduck that they tend to get it over with in the early years - esp. if they are in nursery at all. But think you may be in for a rough winter, because you will be confronting a load of new germs at the bad time of the year. But from the spring things should improve.

Twinklemegan · 15/06/2008 21:35

There are a lot of very snotty children out there.

MalikaAndMungo · 16/06/2008 20:45

A friend told me the other day to write down everything the doctor says, what he/she prescribes, and the child's symptoms. And then to refer to that when they are next ill! Obviously, within reason, because you might miss something more serious. But she has a point!
Syria (where I live) also has a serious antibiotics problem - people can buy them over the counter, take them willy nilly, and then don;'t finish the course. Which makes the place more germy
