Duodenum cancer

My dad has been told today it is very very likely he has duodenal cancer. Obviously it’s quite rare - just looking for stories and experiences, good or bad really. Anything that made a difference or what the journey might potentially look like? Thank you all.

I'm so sorry. My only experience of it wasn't good. My friend had a Whipple procedure, and was told he was surgically cured, all 32 lymph nodes clear. Did chemo as a precaution but was told it wasn't needed really. Three months later it was in his lungs and liver and he died six months after that. The chemo (two different types) didn't touch it.
My top advice would be that if things aren't going well to get in touch with a hospice sooner rather than later. They are the experts in pain management and really do a brilliant job. However, beds are limited, so it's best to get organised if needed.
Wishing you both all the luck in the world.

I’m sorry to hear about your dad, have they said what kind of cancer it is? I had a duodenal GIST, gastrointestinal stromal tumour, a very rare type of sarcoma, even rarer in that location. It was very slow growing and was monitored for 9 years before I had a whipples procedure 4 years ago to remove it. The operation was huge, I was 49 at the time and had complications and stayed in hospital for 5 weeks but I’m cancer free now. Have they said if your dad is eligible for surgery?

Thanks everyone. @MissSmiley no not yet - picked it up on the endoscopy yesterday, we’re just waiting for him to go for a CT to see if it’s spread. Biopsy taken yesterday and results won’t be in for a while yet but they are a formality apparently, they are 99% sure it’s cancer.

He has it in duodenum and head of pancreas. They are fitting a stent to drain bile and feeding tube, and have said he would be a good candidate for the Whipple. He’s so ill bless him.
care looks like it’ll be Leeds.
