Blood in urine

Hi all
does anyone have any experience with this or can put my mind at rest as to what it could be.

male 60 blood in urine only since this morning, went to GP and been referred for urgent urology appointment to rule out bladder cancer. Got letter through already and appt next week. Needing to wee frequently, every hour last night. GP did dip
sample of wee but didn’t show anything so sent off to lab for testing.

obviously worried sick about bladder cancer but could it be a nasty infection? Relative felt unwell last night cold and couldn’t get warm etc like he was coming down with something and then this morning noticed blood. Could have been blood overnight but didn’t turn light on so not sure. Not sure if these are coincidence or linked.

TIA

Along with other symptoms, it sounds like it could be an infection. Dip stick tests don't always pick up on infection, so hopefully the lab will be able to pick it up if its that. Try not to worry, the GP will just be being cautious.

Ah I feel for you, OP. I'm female but I just had my cystoscopy today to rule out bladder cancer. I too have had blood in the urine for quite a long time now. My bladder is absolutely fine! So definitely get the cystoscopy (this will likely be ordered by the GP or consultant) and get the Big C ruled out. The consultant will very likely order a CT scan of your kidneys/urinary tract alongside the cystoscopy. It's not fun, but the scope is flexible and you'll be numbed so it won't be painful... a little weird and uncomfortable but it's important that you know that, even as a guy, it's not too bad apparently.

Blood in the urine can be a myriad of other benign issues like a small kidney stone or an infection or even varicose veins in the bladder, even dehydration. It's almost always caused by something quite straightforward. But definitely get straight in there with the cystoscopy, for peace of mind. Good luck!

Can I just ask, have both you and your relative experienced blood in your urine on the same day?
Did you eat a lot of beets, by any chance? I make borscht quite frequently and get a jump scare if I've forgotten we've eaten beetroot. It really makes urine look bloody.
Did you and your relative cycle or do any activity that can irritate the bladder? I mention this because I cycle, and in the past year, I've cycled WAY too much (four hours a day two and from home to work). I've since moved and reduced my cycling which has changed everything. I had wondered if this irritated my bladder because extensive cycling can irritate it and cause some red blood cells to get into the urine.

I got referred for a cystoscopy a year and a half ago to rule out bladder cancer (though admittedly I would be young to get it as I’m 32, so wasn’t overly concerned) following two episodes of sudden, and extremely visible blood in my urine. Both times, I had absolutely zero signs of infection- no pain, discomfort passing urine, foul smell etc and lab tests came back clear for a UTI.

In my case, it was caused by kidney stones which was a surprise as I passed a kidney stone a few years ago and didn’t have any blood in my urine at any point in that episode.

Since then, I have had blood in my urine multiple times and it’s always been stone related- either a stone which has moved slightly in my kidney, or which has moved out of the kidney into the ureter/ bladder. Most of the time, the blood has appeared without any kidney pain and it’s only a few days later that the pain (or rather, absolute agony!) appears.

I don’t know if you’ve had kidney stones previously, but if your bladder is clear then they will almost certainly do an ultrasound to check your kidney for stones. From there, they will either offer treatment such as lithotripsy to remove the stones (if they’re assessed as too large to pass) or they may just advise you to leave alone if they’re quite small.

It could easily be something other than cancer. It's great they are investigating it promptly.

There are many reasons for blood in wee and most are not anything as serious as that. And the fact it hasn't been happening a lot and heavily for a long time is a good sign.

I wish you/them well x

Thanks everyone i feel abit more calm now after reading your posts. I know the GP is being thorough and really grateful for this but its just scary isn’t it when they refer you urgently and you have an appointment through within a few hours!
it’s not me its a male relative of mine, sorry i might not have made this clear my head was abit muddled when i did the post!

Thank you this is really helpful. The GP did mention kidney stones as a possibility.

Thank you, the letter which came through said “for your admission to hospital” which i thought was odd but i guess if its abit of an invasive procedure maybe they admit you as a day patient or something?

DorisTheFinkasaurus · 06/02/2026 00:25

Oh I wonder if they might be giving you sedative for the cystoscopy, hence the admission. I think males tend to be offered a sedative, which is great actually, but it means you'll probably need to stay in hospital and rest a bit afterward. Perhaps they'll be doing some scans on the day too. Best of luck! Here's hoping it's just a teeny tiny stone that causing you worry. The good news is, your symptom has come on very recently. That's extremely reassuring.

Bunny2607 · 09/02/2026 18:07

Hi all. Just coming back to update that relative went back to GP today as symptoms continued but now has back pain too. Luckily the lab had sent back the results of the urine tests and it had grown e coli, so he’s been given some antibiotics for a week.
still going to go to the appointment on friday at the hospital for peace of mind but all being well should hopefully just be a nasty infection!
