Why am I drinking so much water at night?

and should I speak to the GP?

I have always woken up at leats once in the night thirsty and I drink quite a lot of water in general. However this need is escalating.

Yesterday evening i had two glasses of water in the two hours before bedtime. I then had another three glasses throughout the night. I woke up seven times in total with a really dry mouth really needing a drink (and needed to go to the loo twice).

Im 52, fairly healthy, not overweight.

any thoughts?

Thanks everyone I will make an appointment.

To answer the questions yes I do drink quite a lot during the day so I have had about 7 glasses of water so far today and I go for a wee every 20 minutes or so.

I sleep on my back and I don't snore. I have always had some sugar issues so I do sometimes feel like I am desperate for something sugary. However if I ate a pack of sweets I would then completely crash out and fall asleep almost immediately. My blood sugar has been tested not that long ago (about a year ago) because I bought a kit to use at home and I felt that I had high levels first thing in the morning but the GP said it was fine.

My mum has sleep apnoea and is diabetic.

Diabetes. My kid was like this, constantly drinking water. He was in DKA and on deaths door.

I didnt think I snored but was waking up gasping. Just check with doctor its sounds more like diabetes tho. But Im not a doctor. Keep us posted

I have a doctors appointment for next week. Ive just taken my fasting blood sugar and it was 9.3. Last night was particularly bad and I drank two whole glasses of water and a whole carafe which holds a litre and a half

OP that is a high fasting blood glucose. It's not nailed-on diabetes because things like a cold or infection can cause raised blood glucose, but definitely keep that appointment, and seek medical attention if your symptoms worsen.

I've also just taken it one hour after eating so I can build a picture for the doctor. 9.9. That's after moussaka with carrots rather than a sugary meal.

10.5 three hours after eating.

Edited

Thats really high. You are definately diabetic (I have been diabetic for 22 years.) Normal blood sugar is 4-7 although even 7 would be high for a non diabetic.

Plumnora · 08/02/2026 17:49

That's high. Definitely looks like it could be Diabetes. Please go and see a GP asap as with treatment you should start to feel a lot better.

Fasting blood of 9.3 mmol is very high. Definitely see your gp asap.

It’s high for a normal person but mine was over 35 when I got diagnosed!
