Hair extensions, false eyelashes and prevent jewellery in MRI exam

Hello I've got to have an MRI exam on my breast and I've never had one before.

I've got glue in hair extensions and individual false eyelashes, also acrylic nails. Will these be ok to wear?

I've also got a permanent sterling silver bracelet that's really tiny. It means a lot to me and I'd be really upset to have to cut it off.

Those bracelets went through a fad phase a couple of years ago on social media. I know a few women who got one.

Thank you. I'll ask when I get the appointment.

Please ask before the appointment- if you get there and they can’t do it the slot will be wasted nd the nhs doesn’t have resources to spare.

This. I have just had a 6 week wait for an “urgent” mri. Please contact them before hand to check, just to avoid a wasted slot. You could be waiting a long time for another appointment if they have to rearrange

I’ve never heard of permanent jewellery. And can’t imagine why anyone would attach something to their body that they could not easily remove themselves in an emergency.

(TBH I find the thought of it reminiscent of slavery or harsh imprisonment, so cannot see the attraction.)

I hope your MRI goes well, OP.

Because I have free will and it's something I like that brings me happiness

I've just spoken to the hospital and they said to test it with a magnet. If it's not magnetic then it's fine. But they will re test once in there just to double check

I accidently wore an underwired bra on my MRI recently. I was horrified when I was getting dressed afterwards but was happily in tact and not squashed.

I'm assuming that's a typo for underwired and not a demonic bra.

Actually autocorrect consistently changes underwired to underworld for me too.

Just seen your edit 🤣

Salvadoridory · 06/02/2026 14:59

I like the idea of an underworld bra. Mafia but only those close to me know 😀

It was soldered whilst on my wrist. So it has no clasp basically.

Go to a jewellers that does repairs, have a clasp created so that it's removable. You may need more treatments in your lifetime.

Are your extensions metal free ? Some have tiny metal clamps, or at least they used to, years ago.
I had an MRI with braces - I have a permanent metal brace attached to the back of my teeth to stop them moving again. I was very stressed about it but it was fine, so hopefully your bracelet will be ok, but I can’t confirm either way as a different metal.

ATJ · 11/02/2026 09:52

Just thought I’d update- I’ve had my MRI and got to keep the bracelet on as it’s not magnetic

You can't wear metal of any kind or it will rip out of your body. No gold, silver, no zips etc. it's a really strong magnet basically.

If the extensions have metal hooks then no. If only hair, plastic etc then ok. Lashes aren't metal are they?

The only metal you can get away with is the one they use to rebuild your bones in a surgery. Like I've a metal plate in my leg and it doesn't affect it.

Awesome! I'm quite surprised. I guess it must be the metal they use in surgeries?

Gold isn't magnetic but they always made me remove my gold jewellery.

Isitanamelanchieroraplum · 11/02/2026 10:05

can you have it cut off and then remodelled to have a clasp put on, even a padlock type with a key so it is permanent if you haven’t got a key. My experience with mris tells me they often say they will check again in 3 months just to make sure…

This is incorrect, I was a radiographer and could sometimes feel the magnets twanging my bras clasps, but they were never 'ripped out'. I've also had lots of MRIs myself and have worn jeans in the scanner.

My DD is going to have a head MRI with metal braces on. They've said it's fine but I'm concerned about it!

My husband has had MRIs with his metal heart valve. Now that was scary the first time! She´ll be fine.

Why do they make you take off jewellery then? I've been in about 7 and they seem strict on it. How bizarre.
