Can you ever get rid of tinnitus?

I was told by the specialist who diagnosed me that you will always have tinnitus once it's there but why? What makes tinnitus something you can't eliminate completely? And why does no one really know the cause?

I have had it for years now and at times I don't notice it too much but recently it has been driving me slightly insane.

Have you tried Lyrics?

Eyesopenwideawake · 04/02/2026 09:43

@KilkennyCats @Borborygmus @comeondover I simply talk to the part of the subconscious which is drawing your attention to this non-existent sound – in the belief that you need to be aware of it – and ask it to turn the volume down as much as possible, or off if it's not necessary. It also works with chronic pain that has no useful purpose.

mjf981 · 04/02/2026 22:17

Its quite common, which is the only comforting thing I can say about tinnitus.
Mine started last year. I have the droning noise and also a high pitched sound which is in both ears. It has totally destroyed my MH, and I'm trying to keep going and adjust to it. Some days I feel a bit better and others I feel I'm making no progress at all.
I hope yours isn't permanent, it can (rarely) resolve over time.

I’ve had pulsatile tinnitus for three years. No idea of the cause. I can tell you my heart rate right now just by listening. MRI clear. Bloods fine. Whoosh whoosh whoosh 24/7.

I have also had pulsile tinnitus for three years. Just in left ear though and MRI clear. I have to listen to podcasts to get to sleep otherwise it doesn’t bother me too much. Would like to know cause though.

Anyone with tinnitus should see a dr and really push for a brain scan
The chances are slim that its something nasty but needs ruling out

Ok I'll bite...how do you talk to someone's subconscious??
Does this need to be in person?
I'll try anything once..

It's not mumbo-jumbo; I'm the least woo person I know! Your subconscious is able to move any part of your body without you being consciously involved – walking, for example – so I use that ability and focus it on the subconscious moving your fingers to indicate yes and no replies. It's called the ideo-motor response. If you're in Portugal it can be in person, otherwise Zoom is fine 😉

There's quite a few reviews on my AMA from Mumsnetters who've worked with me, this is what my friend said specifically on FB about her tinnitus "Hello, I just wanted to share my experience with tinnitus in case it helps anyone. My tinnitus on a scale of 1-10 (10 being its loudest) normally sits around a 4 or 5. Sometimes it misbehaves and hits an 8 or 9. I thought I would be stuck with it....She said she could help my tinnitus, so I thought why not I have had one session and it's dropped to a 1 and stayed there. She is hoping to stop it completely with a few more sessions, fingers crossed. But to be honest if it stays as it is now I would be over the moon. It really has helped."

In the subsequent session we got it down to 0.5.

I have had mine for about 30 years. I mentioned it to my gp once and he just said go and get your ears syringed. Which I didn’t as I’d heard it could make it worse. I don’t know what silence is any more but just live with it.

Morethanthis71 · 08/02/2026 17:54

I've got rid of mine thanks to my amazing chiropractor who worked on my neck. One day I realised I just no longer had it.

anrom1969 · 08/02/2026 18:33

It’s relentless and until I saw this thread I’d sort of forgotten I had it ! For now that is , I’ve been so used to it ,White noise masks it , quiet tv at night but it’s always bloody there . I have forgotten what silence is and some days even the rain is a distraction. Sorry if I’ve gone on but I really don’t know if people understand that I can never have peace .

justsaying1232 · 08/02/2026 18:38

I have had it for nearly 30 years following going to a music concert where there were screams all around me.

Of course it exists. How insulting to say otherwise.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 08/02/2026 18:45

DH developed it after getting a cold / ear infection one Christmas. It plagued him for a while (years) though he did get tailored hearing aids which helped. It reduced, flaring up whenever he was stressed, but hasn't bothered him for a long time now.

JaffaCakesMum · 08/02/2026 18:48

My husband had hearing aids fitted last year and was told it should help his tinnitus. After a week or so it was more or less gone although if he forgets to take spare batteries to work he's aware of the tinnitus again but that's simply solved.

GardenersDelight · 09/02/2026 15:37

Ive had it for 30+years and got hearing aids 3 years ago and this definitely masks it while wearing them

Flannelfeet · 03/02/2026 21:37

Ive got it, started during lockdown 😔. I was sent for hearing tests at the hospital and they ruled everything out, just told me it could be another part of my fibromyalgia 🤷🏼‍♀️. It bloody drives me up the wall and I can barely sleep for it, mine is like a tumble drier sound constant in both my ears. Wish it would bugger off 😕

I have the dryer sounds too. Does yours often have a rhythm to it - whomp whomp whomp? Mine does at times (but not others, its not pulsatile). I can almost feeling it 'moving' in my ears. Its driving me mad :(

Yes!!! Its driving me insane. I have been awake most of the night with it 😔.

Wish it would just bugger off so I can have a full night's sleep 😔.

Do you have any tips to cope with it or are you in the same boat as me?

ViolaPlains · 11/02/2026 08:49

The only time I don’t hear mine is when I’m in the shower and the extractor fan is going. I think mine is perimenopause induced, HRT is not helping so far.

Amodernhistory · 11/02/2026 08:58

I was told the cause was very minor hearing loss in one ear following an infection. Not enough to benefit from hearing aid, it’s say 90% on one note/range with rest of hearing at 100%. So there is a cause (though I’m sure I’ve explained it badly).

The good news is I’ve had it 10yrs and it rarely bothers me at all these days. I found it incredibly hard for a while back then, I’m a person who likes silence and the loss of that quiet, forever, was a lot.

I understand when rest of hearing worsens in 60s it might go altogether - though I’m sure there’ll be other things wrong by then - probably be worse!

Sorry for the late response. Another lovely poster on here advised me to stream this at night.

It really does help when it is driving me insane. I'm sorry you have it too. It bothers me much more than my regular hissing tinnitus.
