Mysterious red spots on toddler

Hi everyone,

I would be very grateful if anyone can share any similar experience with their little ones. My 4 year old daughter came up with these spots on her abdomen, sides and upper thighs a few weeks ago. We sent her to the doctors on the first day. They were not sure at all, however they thought it must be viral. She had no other symptoms whatsoever. No runny nose, cough, temperature and the spots were not itchy at all. We asked for a second opinion, again they said not sure but likely viral, probably chickenpox. They took about a week to start clearing up (last picture is 5 days post). 2 weeks later you can barely see some darkness where the biggest spots were. So we let it go.

Today almost three weeks later I noticed on the back of her legs 4 new big red spots with tiny tiny white head in the middle. They don’t bother her at all, not itchy and they do blanch. She is not allergic to anything (as far as we know). Doctors cannot give us any answers and refuse to do any further tests because they are not concerned. However, I am concerned. Where are these coming from? Any ideas or suggestions would be very welcomed. Thank you.

My very first thought was Chickenpox too, but don’t think these would still be coming out a few weeks later x

Molluscum?

GrandmasCat · 01/02/2026 06:55

Another vote for chicken pox but would say the new spots are unrelated. Could be a bad case of molluscum but molluscum wouldn’t go for months or even years.

Keep an eye on what she eats, it may be an allergy but they are not going to send her for testing if it isn’t bothering her (long list for testing therefore priority is often given to those who are experiencing symptoms that could put their development or life in danger),

The first set of spots chicken pox. Hard to say on second set if they don’t go could be mollluscum.

I work in a pre-school & last year we kept seeing children have chicken pox & then get them practically straight away again. It was very strange. Idk if they are though.

Molluscum goes on for ages. My ds had it for 2 years. Derm said this was normal.

The NHS says molluscum should clear within 18 months https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/molluscum-contagiosum/

They told me the same when DS had them. It took 3 years for them to clear.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
I’m fairly confident it isn’t chickenpox based on how it has presented: no blisters, no itching, she hasn’t been unwell at all, and most of the spots started fading within 48 hours.
The new ones that have come up look exactly like the ones from two weeks ago, just in a different place, and they’ve already almost cleared again.
I only heard about molluscum very recently and hadn’t come across it before, but from what I’ve read, it tends to get progressively worse and can take months/years to clear. Her original spots disappeared completely within a couple of weeks, and to me they don’t really look like molluscum anyway.
She’s totally unbothered by them and otherwise doing really well, so the GP isn’t concerned. I’m just wondering what could be causing it.

Hand foot and mouth? When my daughter had it the nurse said they are seeing cases this winter where kids have repeat infections. It varies quite a lot in intensity too. Me and my daughter were really quite poorly with it - very uncomfortable, muscle aches, fever. My son had a few spots which didn't bother him at all and my husband got nothing.

Just sharing an update in case it helps anyone else. My little one’s rash came and went three times over six weeks. After a lot of persistence, our GP agreed to ask dermatology look into it. Dermatologist believe it’s most likely folliculitis. While it can sometimes clear up on its own, because it kept returning, we were prescribed clindamycin cream twice a day along with Dermol wash. We’re only on day two of treatment, but we’re hopeful this will finally clear it up.

I hope this information helps someone. Thank you all for your comments ☺️

have they swabbed it to exclude MRSA? just because it's becoming increasingly resistant to Clindamycin so if the problem carries on please do go back to your GP.

No, they have not. We had to push so much to even get the dermatologist to look at her. That is very helpful to know. Thank you ☺️
