Dd's constipation- what else can we do?

Boxingshibes · 28/01/2026 18:14

Dd has stomach/ bowel/ bladder problems.
We spent last weekend from fri lunchtime to Monday morning in hospital. Dd was diagnosed with chronic constipation and a uti.
We are doing 8x movicol and antibiotics a day but still nothing! Its been 2 weeks since a bowel movement. We've upped their liquids.
When would you go back to dr/ hospital?

Boxingshibes · 28/01/2026 19:02

Try prunes and omega seeds mixed with yoghurt.

FriendsWithoutBenefits12 · 28/01/2026 19:21

Also 2.5 litres water and plenty of exercise. Can she walk plus HIIT?

Thortour · 28/01/2026 19:22

I get fine bran from Ocado. Prunes and chia seeds are good. Lentils blended into soup?

magicscares · 28/01/2026 19:23

I feel for her- this is such a horrible thing to manage. I would go back to the dr tomo.

For me psyllium husk daily, in a large glass of water has been wonderful. Also, a teaspoon of milled flax in water & two teaspoons of chia, soaked in a glass of water for few hours. Absolutely brilliant, upping water & fibre naturally was far more effective for me than anything from the chemist.

Has the dr spoken to her about manual removal? Enema?

WTFiswrongwithworld · 28/01/2026 19:23

My grandchild was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease and constipation was the main symptom.

PistachioTiramisu · 28/01/2026 19:26

When I was a child I had similar problems - I used to love tinned prunes with cream - sorted!

Boxingshibes · 28/01/2026 20:01

@WTFiswrongwithworld thanks for tgat! I've just done the quick online assessment for coeliac via coeliac uk. It suggests we get her tested. Will be going to the Dr's again ASAP.
We are now on 2 different laxative and still no poop.
If nothing by Monday the hospital said that they will do an enema.

Glycerine suppositories, then regular psyllium husk.

Cereal and fruit and a fajita doesn’t sound much for a whole days food - where is the lunch? I suffer with constipation due to various autoimmune issues I have and it’s truly miserable but to get things moving alongside the laxatives she has to be eating quite a lot more than that.

WhatMe123 · 28/01/2026 22:23

Try reduce the dairy even if not intolerant it can really affect how easy it is to go

Ifusay · 28/01/2026 22:25

Movicol does nothing for me. Try Laxido. I’m not Coeliac but gluten stops my intestines moving. Try gluten free to see if it helps. Eat potatoes and rice instead of bread for a few days.

ScaryM0nster · 28/01/2026 22:27

Squats. A shed load of water, and more Movicol.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 28/01/2026 22:30

Buy a disposable enema.
Nothing can come out while there's a huge block of hard stool in the rectum.
You need to get rid of that.

DeathMetalMum · 28/01/2026 22:32

You need plenty of water/fluids to go with the Movicol/laxido (they are the same thing just laxido is not branded.) I would recommend a glycerine suppository too, most pharmacies will have them in. What is the other laxitive that's she's taking?

Ramblingaway · 28/01/2026 22:37

How old is she? Please have a look at the ERIC website for advice, and you can request a call from one of their nurses.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 28/01/2026 22:37

Poor baby! It's bonkers that they discharged her!

I would avoid all dairy for now. Replace it with fruit. Prunes, pears, figs, dates, dried apricots, tinned peaches. Avoid bananas though. And encourage her to be as active as possible. She must be so uncomfortable.

Justmadesourkraut · 28/01/2026 22:38

What cereal? Porridge can help. And fruit? A couple of bananas a day and stewed apple is really good too, along with prunes or dried fruit.

A couple of squares of dark chocolate too

Sending best wishes. Sounds really miserable for her.

fashionqueen0123 · 28/01/2026 22:39

2 weeks! My dr told us to go in after 7 days. I’d go tomorrow. You could try a glycerin suppository too

Edited

Movicol and Laxido are the same.

Riversidegirl · 28/01/2026 22:46

A minimum of 5 prunes per serving shifted my DH whilst he was in hospital on all manner of laxities. Mum used to give us warmedorange juice. That seemed to do the trick toox

magicscares · 31/01/2026 09:09

How is she now @Boxingshibes ?

cocog · 31/01/2026 09:23

movacol is a softer not a laxative she needs a real laxative as well. She’s probably completely blocked so that needs a higher dose and a stimulant with a few days to sort out try warm bath. And a walk. There’s a movicol mums page on Facebook that is informative or ring ERIC (constipation specialist) take her back to doctors she may need an enema.
