Fungal (possibly) rash in armpits - anything else I can try while waiting for Daktarin to work?

I have a rash in both armpits - suspect it's fungal but not sure. Have spoken to GP on phone and been given Daktarin.

It's the second time I've had this medication - last time it was the one with cortisone in (Daktacort). WIth Daktacort it cleared up very briefly but is now back and a week of Daktarin has made no difference.

Obviously I will be making a face to face appointment to have it looked at but in the meantime - has anyone else had this and struggled to get rid of it? Was there anything that helped you?

The rash is red, itchy and ever so slightly raised.

When I've had an armpit rash I think it's been mild eczema, or more recently a reaction to my deodorant (Mitchum - a known problem batch). I've found hydrocortisone cleared it up quite quickly.

Could be the same for you if daktacort worked and daktarin isn't - it may be the hydrocortisone component that had an effect.

If it works you need to keep using it until it's cleared, then taper off, so use every other day for a bit then every third day. Otherwise you can get a rebound effect.

You’ve not been using Mitchum deodorant have you? There will be threads on here from Summer.
Lots of people had a reaction.
I’d been using it for ages and I had a rash like that. It was a particular batch apparently but I didn’t go back to using it.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 27/01/2026 21:53

@24Dogcuddler I was using Mitchum for a while but from what I can gather it was the roll on that was the problematic type. I was using the type where you squeeze a bit out of three holes and rub it on. Anyway I've not been using any deodorant or antipersperspirant since this issue.

@Utini - That's a possibility, though it was just cortisone I used when the rash started and was using that for quite a while before the GP suggested it may be fungal. I have eczema anyway and this just seems slightly different. Difficult to describe how, it's just a feeling. Will bung a bit more on tonight just in case!

eumovate ointment would probably clear it up. Not the cream - has to be the ointment

Handeyethingyowl · 27/01/2026 21:58

You could try La Roche Posay Baume Cicaplast if fungal stuff is not working. Calms almost anything for me.

Drongit · 27/01/2026 22:03

Fluconazole oral tablet is a fungal treatment.

Knackedlonemum · 27/01/2026 22:04

Lamasil maybe if it’s fungal? Available over the counter.

Justwingingit2005 · 27/01/2026 22:18

Oral thrush tablet.
Wash and pat dry. Use something like loo roll and throw it away so you don't keep reinfecting.
Also a layer of sudocream can help.

Mossstitch · 27/01/2026 22:22

Lanes tea tree and witch hazel cream, seems to work on any itchy rashes, I'm allergic to a lot of things and this is my go to, tea tree is anti fungal/anti bacterial and the witch hazel takes down inflammation. If that doesn't work i use eumovate but don't often need to as the Lanes cream usually works.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 28/01/2026 13:08

Thanks everyone - some good suggestions. Had put some hydrocortisone on now so will monitor it.

@Mossstitch - am getting some tea tree oil today.

@Justwingingit2005 - there's a rather old sudocreme lurking at the back of the cupboard! Will drag that out later. It's messy stuff - gets everwhere.

@Mossstitch - bloody hell! One application of tea tree oil last night and there's been barely any itching. And the right armpit rash seems to be drying up. I'm saying it's the tea tree oil; I used a particular cream afterwards, but because it stung like hell, I tried to wipe it off. It was Superdrugs Ezcema cream. So will be continuing with the tea tree!

Tea tree oil cream is brilliant - I've had success after using it in the past for athlete's foot.

Unfortunately I'm not having any success with it at the moment however, as my athlete's foot seems to have turned chronic and is not going away since it started last July...(!). I suspect being perimenopausal isnt helping TBH, and i really need to be morr consiconsistent as I stop and start using it too much.

I had a similar rash on my armpits last year, and I thought it was probably a fungal infection but it turned out to be a bad burn from that awful batch of Mitchum. Sudocrem and tea tree oil cream cleared it up quickly.

Good luck with it, OP. Hope it clears up soon.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 29/01/2026 16:14

@NooNooHead - Thank you, am feeling a tad more optimistic!

Sorry to hear about your athlete's foot going into overdrive - that's an absolute pain. I am also perimenopausal and finding everything is going wrong with my body. Six months of that must be driving you crazy.

The Mitchum has now been binned. Even if this isn't one of the bad batches, I no longer trust it.

@Twins3007 - I actually use that, on my hair. It apparently can be useful in certain cases of hair loss so have been using it for a while. Also have the Nizoral cream. Used both on armpits but didn't seem to make a difference. Maybe I didn't do it often enough.

Well we have helped each other here as I have quite a lot of hair loss and didn't know that could help so Thankyou
