Hey all
Im 36 pregnant and a first time mum and am struggling with swelling. Im used to normal ankle swelling but noticed one is much bigger than other. Obviously googled and it said to get it checked out. Called 111 then went to A&E where they took my blood and urine and have given me an appointment to go back at 1.30am. I am shattered and worrying that I’m being over the top but am still worried, and my blood pressure is high too.
what would your thoughts be based on images? Thank you xx

My thoughts, based on your ankles/feet, stage of pregnancy and what A&E looked at, is that you may well have a degree of pre-eclampsia. You could just have really swollen ankles without any other symptoms but it's the most obvious thing they'd check out if you present like that. I had it towards the end of my first pregnancy. My ankles looked nearly as bad as that - I had pitting oedema, where you can sink your fingers into your puffy ankles and leave indentations. Try and put them up while you wait to go back in. Take a bag with night clothes, comfy pillow, books/phone/charger, snacks, etc. And obviously your notes!

Do you have a headache or wonky vision at all?

Look, if you do turn out to have this, hospital is the best place to be. They'll do regular BP checks and be able to put you on medication to bring it down if needs be. The cure for pre-eclampsia is delivery Smile and at your stage of pregnancy they may well want to keep you in for observation until you are able to give birth. Don't worry. It'll be fine, they'll keep an eye on everything and if they need to intervene, they will. My baby was fine, and after a little blip on the BP front, so was I.

Oh bless you. That must have been scary. Hold on - you're in safe hands and they'll keep an eye on your condition. Be prepared for 6 hourly BP checks (it'll get you used to being woken up all the time! Grin ) and obsessive interest in your pee. But it'll be ok and this will all seem like a strange other-life when you've got your baby in your arms. All the very best.

Good luck and I'm glad you're in the right place being observed. When I saw the pic pre eclampsia was my first guess too.
I had my first DC at 35 weeks years ago with pre eclampsia and we were both fine ☺️ they'll be keeping a close eye on you both but don't be afraid to raise concerns if you do start to feel worse/different.
