Mammography self referring private?

Alphacentaurius · 26/01/2026 11:02

Can you advise of a private self referring mammography in London area? I contacted Nuffield health they said they don't allow self referring.

I am 47, in most Western countries it is strongly advised to have regular checks after 40. (Don't have any symptoms)

Anyone used uk.scan.com ?

Screening over 40 is only provided in two European countries - Turkey and Switzerland. Fine if you want to have screening now but why do you need to suggest UK is an outlier?

sorrynotathome · 26/01/2026 11:06

(sorry I meant screening FROM age 40)

US do over 40. Sorry, I am not interested in politics, I just want my own private health check for my own money.

I’d try Nuffield again if they’re convenient for you and you really want this. There s a Nuffield hospital near me and their website says ‘To book a screening mammogram, call us on tel:03452302040 0345 230 2040. You can refer yourself for a self-pay mammogram if you're over 40 years old and haven't experienced any symptoms or had screening within the last 12 months’.

So unless you’re having mammograms every 6 months or something, or unless you have another specific issue, it sounds as if the person you spoke to wasn’t correct.

That's great - you do you. I wasn't suggesting anything otherwise. You made it "politics" because you implied that UK is not offering standard of care. US will offer things because everything has a financial incentive, not because they are evidence based. Anyway it looks like Nuffield will accommodate you so it's all good.

As a former breast cancer patient I had five years of annual mammograms and I'm now back in the NHS screening cycle of three yearly. I have decided to pay for one at the 18 month point and was planning to use Nuffield which is the only provider I could find within 100 miles.
I'd be interested if anyone in similar circumstances had had private mammograms. In particular I'm interested in whether they can access your mammogram history which is pretty important when you've had breast cancer.

No they wont be able to access your nhs mammogram history. That is strictly limited to the nhs.

I pay for private mammograms as well as having my NHS one. They are quite easy to organise. There are many "one stop clinics" in private hospitals for this. You go in, have your consultation then mammogram and results all while you are there.

Somanythoughts · 26/01/2026 13:22

My breast cancer was detected using a private mammogram and ultrasound (I'm considered a young bc patient as not old enough to be invited for regular mammograms). I went via circle health group and i had to pay for a private dr consultation first (£210) for the dr to then 'prescribe,' the necessary imaging. Maybe that's what they mean by you can't self refer straight to the mammogram?

PermanentTemporary · 26/01/2026 13:22

@Flicktick i would make a Subject Access Request to the hospital Trust that actually did your mammogram. The information in the record belongs to you, though the physical record belongs to the Trust I think. I have t asked for digital info myself so don’t know how they handle that, but it ought to be doable. I’d grit your teeth, allow enormous amounts of time and be very persistent.

Flicktick · 26/01/2026 13:28

@PermanentTemporary thanks, I'll look into it.
Lack of history to compare is why many first time mammograms trigger a recall. So I think history would be helpful when viewing my mangled scarred breast!

https://uk.scan.com/ Don’t need a referral.

Yes, I saw this, and the clinic which is available on UK.scan.com is Nuffield Guildford. Yesterday I went to Nuffield Guildford website and sent request for mammogram and they called me back and said this service is already not available in self referring. So I wonder if I book via UK.scan.com and pay £250 and then will loose my money as Nuffield will refuse to take me without referral.

It worked fine for me (Nuffield but not that branch). They will take you via Scan because Scan is effectively the referrer.

PermanentTemporary · 26/01/2026 15:36

Maybe try BUPA Crawley? The doctor you see after the mammogram will be a GP but I assume that a radiologist will review the images?

Just to be clear, I don’t think any of this is a particularly good idea. It may be that they are discovering good reasons not to accept self referral and the option is becoming less available.

I went to the women’s health clinic https://share.google/z05CQaAGBiU44X0WJ last week through a service called Check4Cancer https://www.check4cancer.com/ via my private health insurance. I saw a consultant who spoke to me about the risk (I had many lumps) and they did a mammogram and ultrasound same day and I’ve been referred for a MRI. I would highly recommend them.

I didn’t have a referral. I just called up and went.

Another one for HCA, a one-stop clinic.
