GA for vasectomy?

NightSky1217 · 26/01/2026 10:54

My husband is due to have a vasectomy soon and after seeing the urologist has been advised that a general anaesthetic is better for his particular case.

Does anyone have any experience either with themselves or their DH having a vasectomy with GA? I can’t lie, it does worry me he’s being put out for such a small op, seems unnecessary.
I’ve tried to look online but I can’t seem to find exactly what GA they use.
Years ago I had an endoscopy and they used a ‘twilight sedation’ on me but it was very much described as a sedation not GA.
DH went on his own to see urologist so didn’t ask!

Lots of people have GAs for other operations. He’ll be ok!

People aren’t given GA just for shits and giggles. I expect the urologist knows what they are doing Smile

it's not that uncommon for it to be done with GA for a variety of reasons. Just occasionally it's not such a 'small op' as most women think. Alternative might be a short acting spinal anaesthetic if he really doesn't want a GA, but that depends a bit on the reason the surgeon thinks anaesthetic input is needed (he'd probably be more likely to get up and out quicker with a GA than a spinal). I would presume they are not suggesting it for fun, if my husband needed it it is up to him to decide on what the doctors told him

Imagine a man coming in here and saying 'well a midwife suggesting whatever for my female partner but I as a man didnt need something for an unrelated medical reason'

It is not the same nor a competition

I'm an anaesthetist.
It's relatively unusual for vasectomies to be done under GA these days but not unheard of. I'd assume that the surgeon feels that for some reason the procedure is going to take a bit longer or be more involved than average for your DH, though occasionally I have known extremely anxious men be offered a GA.
Asking the urologist what anaesthetic would be used would have been pointless anyway - that's not their job. Your DH should have an anaesthetic preassessment appointment before the procedure, though for minor surgery, if he is fit and well that may well be a phone call or just filling in a questionnaire, but he will definitely get to meet his anaesthetist on the day and have the opportunity to ask any questions. The anaesthetist will tailor the anaesthetic to your husband's needs considering any pre existing medical conditions and the procedure, but generally something like this will be very straightforward and low risk - try not to worry too much.
The Royal College of Anaesthetists has some useful information on their website which you might find helpful. I hope all goes smoothly.

Thanks for the replies all. I think it’s only natural to worry about any GA big or small, that’s my main concern. Appreciate it will be for a relatively short amount of time so that is reassuring.

@PollyBell I think you’ve really misunderstood my initial post. I used my previous endoscopy as an example of a certain type of sedation, I didn’t once suggest my husband should have the same. I also haven’t been pushing for a local anaesthetic to him or anyone else, these are my worries not his. No need to be so curt in your reply when I was seeking experience of others.

@AgeingDoc @Greybeardy thanks for your advice and info it is really appreciated. His op is coming up quite soon, so I guess this will be ironed out with the anaesthetist when he is there.

A bit late to the party. My husband had his vasectomy under a GA (his choice as in his words he didn’t want to be awake whilst they meddled with his balls). The anaesthetist and surgeon explained everything. He was fine.
