I'll try and keep this short- I had a kidney stone which was blocking the ureter, and was admitted, as we live in Germany they wanted to keep me on for 2 weeks for obs, but I pleaded with them to let me out so they passed a tube up through the bladder to the ureter to the kidney - is it called a stense? There was a fair amount of blood in my urine all day yesterday and I gave them a sample today which was still dark red, but they discharged me anyway. There is still a lot of blood tonight, but I so do not want to ring the hospital as I am worried they will admit me again. Does anyone know what is normal in this situation?

I'm sorry but I have no experience of this. Just wanted to give it a bump and say hope you get better soon.

Hi there.

I have had 2 stents for kidney stones.

You poor thing, they can be really painful, and a stent can help a lot. Normal still to have blood as your kidneys are still reacting to the stone - but if you still have noticeable blood over the next couple of days you will need to be seen again, as with the stent there shouldn't be a lot of blood - unless like me the stent gets infected and has to be removed!

I know how you feel about hosspital - I have actually had a couple of small stones pass this week (happens every so often for me - I have a problem known as 'ad nauseum' stones, which means I get little ones on and off). This time I have stayed at home as I couldn't face the hospital set up once more.

Not normal in UK to be kept in for 2 weeks, unless you need a lot of pain releif. What have they given you? I was given Voltarol (diclofenac) which was no use at all, turned out later I found out that it doesn't work in 20% of cases. So if you are in pain, keep telling them - I ended up on Pethedine which was great - though it made me sleep a lot.

You need to keep on drinking a load of water to get the stone to pass - I still drink 8 pints a day to stop more forming.

Here's hoping you feel better soon. I have a lot of experience of this, so feel free to message or CAT if you need to!

How are you this morning MLTN?

MuchLessTiredNow · 14/06/2008 20:07

Thanks weegie. I really appreciate the posts - the power of mumsnet! I am OK today - still very very washed out and wanting to sleep all the time, and still quite a bit of blood in my urine, but I am not in pain, I can just feel the stent. I know in UK I wouldn't be kept in, but here they do things v differently, and once you are in it is so hard to get out. My mum has come over to help with the dcs which is brilliant. My stone apparently is right at the bottom near the bladder - can you feel it when it passes? I obviously felt it go down the ureter, but once it moves again will I feel it too? Could I pick your brains about diet as well? Since I have had it in, I haven't had any alcohol - I thought it was better to give my kidneys as little to do as possible, and am only drinking water and herbal tea for the same reason - do you find this is the best long term plan? Do you know any foods which are good/bad?

I am no pain relief now - had a voltarol injection when it was bad, but nothing since.

Loads and loads of water is my best tip. I drink 8-10 pints a day. Important to make sure that it is not mineral water which can put too much Calcium into your body - I drink tap water as much as I can.

Alcohol is processed by the liver, so doesnt put as much strain on the kidneys, but prob a good idea to avoid. Have they told you the reason for your stone? Some people have what are called oxylate stones, and there is a very specific diet which can help a lot - mostly men have this though! Or it can be caused by problems with your parathyroid gland, and there is a very specific blood test for this (needs your blood frozen - quite specialised). Or you can get Urate stones from too concentrated urine, its the stuf in uring getting so cincentrated that it turns into crystals.

Mine were hormaonal - the lining of my kidney reacted to being pg, and formed thousands (I am not joking!) of teeny grains of sand, which I had to pass. I had a stent fitted at 32 weeks pg, but it got badly infected and had to come out. Had another 6 months pp, which also got infected.

You can feel the stent sometimes - I hated it. Made me jump when I sat down! When it was taken out there were loads and loads of clots and cuts in my bladder - it made me incontinent as well, which was awful.

Try to find out what kind of stones you have.It can make a huge difference to treatment. DO you get urine infections as well.

If you want to email me, my addy is t i t t m a r s (at) h o t m a i l (dot) c o m (minus spaces!)

Take care, it does make you very very washed out and tired, a kidney stone is a major illness and you need to recuperate.

Take care!
