Anyone get Ocular migraines?

Anxietyspiral · 24/01/2026 08:00

About to get in the shower this morning and looked in the mirror and saw my reflection with only one eye. It looked like the other eye was completely covered over by skin. I actually jumped back and let out a little scream and my other eye suddenly came back. Spent the whole shower panicking I might be having a stroke but now the rainbows and zig zags have started so it seems like another migraine. Anyone else get these? I only get them about once a year but they frighten the life out of me every time.

Yes - 90% of the time I get the pretty flashing lights, but occasionally I will have an enormous grey rectangle that covers most of my vision and it freaks me out every time because it also looks very like the main symptom of a retinal detachment.

Holidaying2025x · 24/01/2026 08:30

Yes every so often, sometimes I don't even have a migraine so I think lack of sleep triggers them. I get the zigzags

MsPug · 24/01/2026 08:31

Me! If I can I drink a small can of coke, take two painkillers and close my eyes for 20-30 mins. This gets rid of it and I can continue on with my day. If I can't do that I just shut my eyes for as long as I can but do feel rough after a bit hungover like

Hogglehedge · 24/01/2026 08:32

Yes. I too thought i was having a stroke the first time i got one. They are absolutely awful and wipe me out afterwards. I get bad zig zag flickering and brief temple headache. Ive not had one for a long while now but I used to get them after sex aswell. As soon as i get the flickering i take 2 nurofen and try not to focus on it and it helped. Since I started taking magnesium (nutrition geeks) and msm supplements ive not had any. Im 48 in full peri .

I used to but haven't had one since menopause was over. Horrible frightening things.

ChanceOfALifeLine · 24/01/2026 08:34

Yes, maybe 2-3 times a year. I find my vision slowly goes around the edges, giving me a very narrow field of vision, and I get the wavy rainbow things. I lie down and close my eyes and it’s normally gone within about half an hour.

It’s rare that I get any headache with them, for which I am grateful! First time I had one I was driving, that was scary.

Alwaysworrying25 · 24/01/2026 08:37

I had one of these last week, my first ever time, it was terrifying. I also had weird rainbow coloured zig zags in one eye. Lasted about 45 minutes and then I had a terrible headache, my whole head was throbbing. The headache lasted for days. I actually made a post about it on here. Went to the opticions who checked my eyes and said it was a migraine. I think mine was triggered by stress. I have bad health anxiety and OCD and I went on a spiral that I'm only just coming out of now (kind of) I feel for you as I was scared witless.

Arcticsway · 24/01/2026 08:41

Yes, I get ocular migraine with the zigzags, they last about 45 minutes. I used to get them a few times a year but I can't remember the last time I had one, it must be about four years ago.

TheSlothChild · 24/01/2026 08:42

Yes, haven’t had one for years and years now but did used to suddenly lose vision in one eye. No other symptoms, just vision loss with the zig zags. Maybe once every two years or so.

It happened once just as I was pulling out the services to start my leg of a long drive. I was very glad it happened then and not a minute later when I would have been on the motorway!

Marcipix · 24/01/2026 08:44

DH does, he takes 2 paracetamol with a full fat Coke, and he times how long it takes to go. Usually less than 20 minutes.

SucculentWindowLedge · 24/01/2026 08:47

Yes, they come in clusters for me. I find I need to wait calmly and they pass in 20-30 minutes. I have had them come in at all sorts of times, once I gave a big keynote presentation through one. i can’t tell you how many I’ve had while driving. When they started I would pull over, but now I am kind of used to them.

The last one was the worse, when I looked at people the left side of their face was lower than the right side.

ThatWasMyLastFatFreeFrush · 24/01/2026 08:49

I get the rainbow/grey wavy vision in my left eye. They used to last for hours in my 20s but now they're over in ten minutes or so (40s).
They started getting better when I had my wisdom teeth removed but I don't know if that's actually connected to it or not!

RipplePlease · 24/01/2026 08:49

I get them maybe twice a year. Like many have said, the first one is very unnerving!
Mine consist of almost rectangular shapes in the far corner of my vision.
DH is an optometrist and prescribed paracetamol and rest which always work. I guess they last around 30-45 minutes. I get no actual pain but I used to suffer with extremely painful textbook migraines before menopause.

Blogswife · 24/01/2026 08:52

I used to get them when the light (either natural or artificial) is bright. Part of my vision is obscured by “ floaters”. The only way to get rid was to sit with eyes closed for 10 minutes or so. I went to opticians to get this checked out and he recommended dry eye drops - I’ve started using them and hardly have them now

Giantlanternlight · 24/01/2026 09:00

Yes I get big splodges over both eyes - like water puddles. I take 2 or 3 aspirin at the first wiff and that normally sorts it. Aspirin was recommended to me at the hospital headache clinic and it's been a game changer.

Placetobreathe · 24/01/2026 09:03

I've been getting these on and off since I was about 10 - many years ago.

When I was young they were very severe and used to involve flashing lights, followed by intense pain in the eye and then vomiting.

These days they are less severe and if, when the sight disturbance starts, I can either sit down or lie down with my eyes closed somewhere quiet, and consciously relax, then I can stop them developing into a full blown migraine.

The sight disturbance never fails to be upsetting though, and for me at least, is totally debilitating when it's ongoing.

TalulahJP · 24/01/2026 09:05

i get the zig zag variety snd a headache above my right temple. Gone in half an hour.

I only get them in the winter when my head is full of phlegm. im sure it presses on the passages inside my head and presumably the optic nerve is one snd maybe it get squished by the swelling passages containing gunk. Possibly also because i’m not drinking enough water. i dont get them if im fully hydrated wirh 1.5 litres of water a day, only if im drinking coke or coffee etc and hydrating with that, as it duesnt hydrate me ss i just run to pee it out.

Anxietyspiral · 24/01/2026 17:04

So many of us 😢

Its very unnerving in the beginning until you figure out what it is. Mine are also triggered by stress, lack of sleep and dehydration and started with perimenopause.

I get them , it’s like a kaleidoscope , mainly my left eye and I tend to get them in clusters with weeks or months in between . No discernible trigger for mine

INeedAnotherAlibi · 24/01/2026 17:14

I get other migraines fairly often. Get the occular type about once a year. Impairs my vision and very disorienting. I take sumatriptan nasal sprays when migraines start, have an amazing effect.

Bluemin · 26/01/2026 22:54

Yes I get these but I don't get rainbow colours or zigzags, just a weird blotch. The first time it was circular and yellow. Second time it was a weird angular shape and blue! Mine also last ages - over 12 hours. Have been to A&E to rule out stroke, seen opticians etc. They say it is retinal migraine which i assume is the same as occular?

longtompot · 26/01/2026 23:31

I have been getting quite a few recently, one went into a full on pain migraine last week, which hasn't happened for years.
Mine start out by me realising I can't read some writing and then I see the little zig zag almost letter c which graduates bigger and bigger. They usually go within 20 mins, and will go from eye to eye, in that if I have one in my left eye then the next one will be in my right eye. I've even woken up in the night with one, which if now I get two in the same eye in a row means I know I've had one in the night.
I think mine are due to bad sleep and tiredness. Maybe because I'm menopausal as well.

Owly11 · 26/01/2026 23:37

Yes zig zag circle starting small and getting big over the course of about half an hour. Then it disappears and I don't get a headache but feel very tired. Dehydration, bright sunlight and tiredness trigger mine. These days I just have a glass of water and ignore it and carry on with whatever I am doing.

ChanceOfALifeLine · 27/01/2026 10:16

I’ve not noticed a particular trigger for mine, but I got acupuncture for a while and that absolutely triggered them. Would get both the visual disturbances and headache within a couple of hours of an acupuncture session. Haven’t tried it since!
