Is this really a hospital job?

My daughter (24) said I should go to the hospital but I’m really not sure this warrants a visit.

ive had a mirena coil in for 3 years, no periods but have started bleeding the other day. I have lower back pain, I feel quite flu-ey and achy with an achy throat. I’ve got some foul smelling diarrhoea. My DD says I should go to the hospital as it sounds like a nasty infection but I’m not sure and think it can wait until Monday. Opinions? Thanks

Can’t you call 1111 for an out of hours GP appointment?

What's the lifespan of the hormones in your Mirena? As i understand it's s not abnormal for them to run out and periods to return as a result.

The other symptoms sound like you have the flu or a stomach bug, but not automatically hospital worthy or necessarily related to the bleeding. Do you have a fever and if so how high? Have you taken paracetamol/ibuprofen and did that help? I'd go by the severity and duration of your symptoms and not panic about the bleeding at this point. Generally infectious diarrhoea type things are best kept out of A&e as they are self-limiting in most people and also very contagious, although obviously there are exceptions when people get super unwell or dehydrated, or are medically vulnerable.

No that’s not what A&E is for. Speak to your GP

Mirena is 6 years contraception and 8 years HRT

Ok, so 3 years is too soon for sure.

OP I'd make a GP appointment about the bleeding side of things but see how you go with the diarrhoea - nothing you've said sounds like it can't be managed at home for now.

how's everyone decided it's two unrelated problems, rather than a IUD related infection causing all the symptoms? I'd deffo get medical advice and if I became more unwell I'd have a very low threshold for visiting hospital. ls the mirena definitely in the right place?

alexdgr8 · 23/01/2026 19:35

Ring 111.
Then it's their decision.
All the best.

nhs 24 will triage and advise. hope you feel better soon.

111 for an out-of-hours GP consulation. Locate a thermometer so you can tell them your temperature too. Hope you feel better soon.

I'd call 111 for advice as it's the weekend. If you're feeling very unwell then it wouldn't be sensible to wait for the GP on Monday. I also would not want to sit and wait for hours in A&E if I had diarrhoea!

Without wishing to give you a diagnosis, I can tell you that every time I've had covid I've had horrible gastro issues and at least twice experienced post menopausal bleeding. Never had a cough with it.
