Infected cyst!

I’ve had a small cyst for years that has never bothered me. Last Friday I noticed it had grown and was slightly pink around it, it also had started to hurt. Went to the drs and they prescribed anti biotics but now it’s a lot redder in colour and the pain hasn’t gone. Why would it go so red when it should be getting better with anti biotics? I’ll be going back to the drs on Monday if it’s not gone down by then, which I assume it won’t! Pics attached.

Ouch, OP, that looks painful. Don't like the look of that second pic - maybe it's just the way the photo is taken, but looks like there might be some tracking of the infection. Do you have someone with you who can draw a line around the redness to check it's not spreading?

Oh, and get thee over to Sporner Corner - they'll love this and give you tons of advice!

I don’t at the moment but I will have a go myself! I’ve posted on sporner corner also. Thanks for your help :)

Nasty looking, I'd send a pic to the GP tomorrow.

I'm glad now that I paid to get rid of two of those on my back in December, in exactly the same place. I wondered why I was bothering.

I hope you get it sorted soon.

Django1988 · 18/01/2026 10:02

I may do the same if they don’t get it sorted! It’s so sore. Yes I’ll send a pic first thing tomorrow and see what they say

@Django1988 draw a line round the cyst. You will be able to see if the infection is spreading then. Good luck 🍀 🤞

How did you find a provider to do that for you?

You just book an appointment with a dermatologist at your local private hospital. No GP needed.

I paid 240 for the consultation which was a couple of weeks wait, they were taken off a couple of weeks later. Including 275 for histology on a funny looking mole, also removed, it cost just over one thousand. Worth every penny.

This happened to me and it needed 2 lots of antibiotics. NHS will say don’t squeeze it as this can make it worse. I’m hoping one of the gps will remove it when it’s settled down as nhs dermatology not interested.

Django1988 · 18/01/2026 18:21

I couldn’t squeeze it, it’s too sore! Fingers crossed they remove it for you! I’m hoping for the same with mine otherwise it could keep on getting infected over and over again

I sent a picture to my GP who referred me to the same day emergency department. After waiting for 3 hours they drained it and removed the ‘capsule’ as they called it. Had a severe allergic reaction to the local anesthetic (almost fainted, sick and throat closed up) so still here after they kept me overnight for observations. Just waiting to go home now!

So hopefully it won’t come back now
