Hi. Im looking to buy a rise and recliner.. rather than buy a new cheap one.. I'm looking at pre loved/ second hand etc ( market place) rather have a good second hand like HSL or similar.. any recommendations? Im 5ft 6( and half lol) weigh 16 stone ( although reducing) .. having an hip replacement and top spine ( cervical) surgery.
Thankyou.

DP needed one after surgery. We got it from Argos. Been a great buy at a fraction of the cost of other places we looked.

I got a second hand one from FB when I had a hip replacement, it was brilliant. I can’t remember which make it was but was a HSL type chair. I sold it on afterwards

This. I got one for my mum from Argos it was great but it did need part assembly.

You don't sound like a candidate for it, but don't fall for the visiting salesperson who will measure you up for one and then fail to deliver like my mum did. :(

Thankfully paid on credit card so got money back that way. She bought from a local furniture shop sale in the end and is very happy with it.

We bought one for my mum from careco as just too awkward to think about delivery etc with second hand. She's very happy with it, it was supposed to be a temporary bed as well as her main arm chair but she more or less lives in it now - prefers it to sleeping in her bed.

It was o e of the cheaper new ones, but not cheap of course. Worth it to her though.

I'm not having a sales man.. l did say im getting a second hand one?
Can l ask why you feel l don't sound like a candidate for one?
I already have a stairlift.. a wet room a carer/ cleaner/ hand rails/ zimmer frame/ walking sticks.
Drop down loo rails.. two broken hips .. a broken pelvis.. cervical spondylosis with radiculopathy and stenosis.. osteoarthritis/ Fibromyalgia and loads of other problems.. seemed a funny thing to say...( I've been advised to get one).

I took that post to mean you didn't seem silly enough to be conned by a dodgy salesman!

Multiyork used to make a recliner chair, or something from Tetrad/Wesley Barrell would be a safe bet. I work in the furnishing trade and I'd be a wealthy woman if I had a £10 for every phone call I get about repairs from the cheap "care" company made recliners that are good for a skip after 6 months. They're so poorly made there is very little way of repairing them most of the time.

I got a second hand HSL one on eBay. Cost be about £150 plus about £150 for delivery. I've had it a couple of years and I am very happy with it. They come in different sizes - I'm 5' 9" and normalish weight for my height and got a medium. I knew this was my size because I had tried them in a shop.

Good! Yes my one was something like £2k new as well. It has all the bells and whistles. Hope you like one you are looking at.

Try searching on Find my item

Nourishinghandcream · 23/05/2026 07:11

My parents had the HSL dual motor R&R chairs and they were excellent, definitely track one of those down if you can.
The duel motor means more control & positioning options, more expensive when new but definitely worth it.

They had two each (one for the living room and another in the conservatory), measured up at home (very nice sales people) my Ddad had the larger size while my Dmum had medium (I think).

When it came to sell they are relatively difficult to get rid of as there are so many on the SH market.
Despite being in fantastic condition (one was practically new) you end up selling them for 10% of the new price and even then consider yourself lucky to have got rid as they are large, heavy items (although the HSL chairs come apart for transportation).

vdbfamily · 23/05/2026 07:18

Be aware they come in lots of heights and widths and depths so definitely try it out.
Also be aware you get single and double motor. If it cost £2000 it is likely double motor which is better.
With a single motor,as you recline, your feet are elevated and vice versa, and with double motor you control the backrest and footrest separately so can sit up straight with your feet elevated.
Some charity shops have them, especially the ones that specialise in furniture.
My advice would be that on the days ( or times of day) you feel able to stand without using the stand mechanism, try and do something, and just use the stand when very fatigued, otherwise you will start to lose arm strength and leg strength.
Good luck with finding one.

Just coming to say this. My poor mum got absolutely blindsided by a smarmy git. It was about 15 years ago and the chair was ridiculously expensive. Deposit by cheque, which was deposited the next day, so when we git through to her that she'd been done, too late to cancel cheque. The accounts department was always inexplicably busy when we called, ignored emails, the cooling off period was shrinking. It took a letter threatening small claims, citing consumer rights law for the deposit to miraculously appear back.
We got one at a local independent retailer for a lot less.
