My DD was recently diagnosed with psoriasis, the consultant prescribed it but said there may be a long wait as there is none in the country atm. The pharmacy said they couldn't hold onto the prescription so I've phoned the consultants secretary who said she will call back but have any of managed to get it on prescription or even order it from the pharmacy? Its a shame if we can't get hold of it because everyone seems to say it works so well.

Used2bthin - How irritating for you both that you can't get your hands on the right treatment, especially in summer, which is an itchy old time. I was diagnosed with psoriasis at 6 and spent most of my growing up years trying to find a treatment that worked for me. What changed things for me was a holiday to Israel, where I used dead sea products. My skin changed immediately and I have never since had a flare up.

There's a range of options - bath soaks, hand soaps and I've found they do a far better job than some of the 'official' treatments. You get them from all the major chemists. (Sorry if you know this already.)

In short, can't answer your initial question, but dead sea stuff might be a good interim measure while you wait for the genuine article to become available. Hope it's soon.

Thank you I think I've seen those products, literally just the brand that does scrubs etc? I'll have to keep an eye out. I think I'd have to be careful though as they are not sure yet what it is on her face, could be psoriasis or excema which could flare up I suppose. She is only 20m bless her so I'm not sure if she could anyway but she doesn't scrath it so I had assumed it didn't itch too much. Poor thing if it does and I haven't realised thats whats bothering her!

Didn't realize she was so young, sorry. Malki is good, with dead sea source a good second. Both are very gentle to skin but I have never used them on the face.

I didn't mean to worry you about the itching. It only tends to get really itchy when raw and scratched - which is why the bath soak is so good as it adds moisture to the skin and makes psoriatic lesions (ghastly phrase) less likely.

used2bthin · 13/06/2008 16:13

I might well try the bath soak then I'll look out for those brands thanks for the tip. She has got plaques of it on her elbows and thigh but they don't seem to worry her they just look awful. I wish we could find a cure for whatever the skin problem is on her face but even the dermatologist hasn't diagnosed it as anything yet, it covers both her cheeks poor thing. Don't worry you haven't worried me about the itching. I'm pretty sure the psoriasis hasn't bothered her anyway except when I put suncream on when it seems to sting. Perhaps because she hasn't irritated it it hasn't started to itch.

I find mine itches when its flaring then settles down once its stable. I didn't know you can't get coal tar at the moment. Thats a bit bad.

used2bthin · 13/06/2008 23:13

Apparently something to do with them thinking it wasnt in enough demand now but it will be in at some point? The consultants secretary never calle dback so I didn't find out if they can order it for me but the chemist said they can't even order it in. Must be some way to get hold of it though.OYBBK I LOVE your name it aways makes me smile!

Perhaps we should all picket our chemists til it returns lol!!

For suncream have you tried the boots soltan one? - doesnt give my dd a rash and it doesnt seem to bother my psoriasis.

GentleOtter · 14/06/2008 08:30

My chemist had to send to Ireland for a coal tar ointment which had been prescribed....

I am tring salcura Zeoderm on my skin just now here and am really surprised at the improvement.

used2bthin · 14/06/2008 22:58

Thanks all, pickiting them is a good idea! So annoying to stop getting something which helps people. Interstingabout the chemist having it sent from Ireland GentleOtter, I might try speaking to a different chemist after I have talked to the consultant to see if another one is more helpful. The zeoderm looks good, I use epaderm atm on it and on her cheeks as weel as various steroids depending on how bad it is. Does it ever go through phases where it completely clears up for anyone? Thanks for the suncream tip OYBBK, it was a BOOTs one that really seemed to sting her, it was supposedly hypoallergenic etc I'm not sure which one it was now. I ended up buying a ridiculously expensive one from a health shop called Lavena, its got a good consistensy and she doesn't flinch or cry when it goes on which is great.
