Oof yes that's a job for the doctor.

Pepperedpickles · 15/01/2026 20:42

I actually think I’d be ringing 111 and getting that seen to asap. Definitely needs antibiotics, possibly IV ones.

Sherunswithwolves · 15/01/2026 20:48

Agree, I'd be having that seen asap.

Standard advice is to draw round the redness with a biro / marker, and write the time on it. Then you can see if or how quickly the redness is spreading.

Dreamer2027 · 15/01/2026 21:02

Thankyou. He doesn't have a High Temperature and he feels ok in himself does that make a difference to it or not and he still needs antibiotics?

It needs assessed by a doctor.

Connachtfive · 15/01/2026 21:06

Looks infected so 111 for sure

Hotchocolateandmarsh · 15/01/2026 21:08

I would draw around in little dots tonight in biro. See the doctor tomorrow and if the red marks got bigger the treatment might be different if it stays the same. If you get antibiotics and sent home carry on assessing the red mark for 48hrs to watch if it’s growing

MissMoneyFairy · 15/01/2026 21:09

It needs looking at sooner rather than later, its red, swollen is it tracking outwards? How old is he. How long has it been like that. It might need a proper clean , drainage and antibiotics.

lissie123 · 15/01/2026 21:10

Get that seen as soon as possible by a health professional. Please call 111

dylexicdementor11 · 15/01/2026 21:11

Please contact NHS 111- getting medical advice from strangers on the internet could be very dangerous. Good luck!

RosesAndHellebores · 15/01/2026 21:14

Ouch. That looks like a Blandford Fly bite or is a very, very nasty abscess. I'd only not get that looked at tonight if 111 told me it was ok to wait until tomorrow.

Dreamer2027 · 15/01/2026 21:32

Thankyou for replies. He is 19. It started as just a red lump a week ago, now it looks like that but I've asked him and he says he is ok, and he hasn't got a High Temperature. If he was unwell I know he would need to be seen but because he feels ok I was not sure about contacting 111 as they will ask if he has a High Temperature and is unwell.

111 will always advise medical help, Infection can develop very quickly.

CarminaBiryani · 16/01/2026 01:54

I think that looks like cellulitis OP.

I had what I thought was a small insect bite after going to Spain, was a bit itchy, then got bigger, went to A&E and they gave me something to draw the gunk out.

When it came out the 'hole' was still getting bigger, so I went back. They admitted me straight away and put me on intravenous antibiotics (to my surprise, no temperature or anything) as they said it can spread really quickly. Not how I'd expected to spend the bank holiday weekend.

DoIdriveaVauxhallZafira · 16/01/2026 01:59

Definitely draw around the redness and swelling with a biro tonight and seek help from 111.

If redness or swelling expanda beyond biro or you see any red track marks developing, or fever, unwellness, headache or light sensitivity etc then straight to a&e

I'm not a medical professional btw but that looks pretty nasty

BeenChangedForGood · 16/01/2026 19:45

How did you get on @Dreamer2027?

Dreamer2027 · 16/01/2026 20:07

Thankyou everyone for your Help. Yes he got Flucloxacillin for a week and if it gets worse and he was unwell then go to Hospital.
