Is there a treatment for cystitis that doesn't involve mixing sachets of stuff into glasses of water, and having to drink it?

Because it makes me gag and retch.
I think I have cystitis, I have pain on passing urine, but have only passed urine twice today, despite drinking at least 4 pints of squash and a glass of water

pills from your gp

charliecat · 12/06/2008 23:23

its vile stuff isnt it. I mix it with pathetic amount of water and then drink a pint. Vile Vile

drink cranberry juice. Its a natural anti biotic.

MrsSprat · 12/06/2008 23:24

Cranberry juice, but yes drugs too.

emma1977 · 12/06/2008 23:33

Cranberry juice is not an antibiotic, it works by changing the pH of your urine.

See your GP or practice nurse for a short course of ABs to get rid of it.

ScottishMummy · 12/06/2008 23:36

cranberry juice can be preventative but not necessarily treatment.try over counter treatment if no resolution go see gp.get advice.dipstick or urine culture can be used as diagnostic tools

Amphibimum · 12/06/2008 23:39

nitrofuantoin (sp?)
thats the antibiotic you want.

if its v early days you can 'flush it out' with pints and pints of non stop water drinking. or unswwetened cranberry juice.

cranberry concentrate capsules from health food shops are good, eaten by the handful. (tablets made from powder, not so much ime)

avoid like the plague; citrus juices, tea and coffee and alcohol.

Lemon barley water is the traditional rememdy or treatment for cystitis which is more palatable than those sachets.

Cranberry juice is good too.

If 4 pints of water haven't eased it though (because you can sometimes stop it dead in its tracks if you drink enough) then it probably is time for a trip to the doctors.

Hope you feel better soon.

Cranberry, lemon barley water, plain water - if none of these help then you need an antibiotic to shift it. SYmpathies.

Weegiemum · 13/06/2008 03:44

Antibiotics from the GP.

Cranberry jiuce helps prevent, but wont make it better once you have it (so says my Urologist - I have an ongoing kidney problem whcih makes me prone to UTIs)

Lot s and LOTS of water the best bet if you dont want to go to the doc.

Weegiemum · 13/06/2008 03:47

Noone here can recommend an antibiotic either. There are several in commmon use for UTI, but the only way to be sure (and I am not always sure as I have a course ready to take for UTI at any time when I cant get in touch with GP) is to put a sample in to the doc for them to analyse.

alipiggie · 13/06/2008 05:11

Cranberry juice and holland and barrett sell great natural recipe cranberry tablets too and loads and loads and loads of water . Worked for me. Never had antibiotics for it. But you must drink water.

I forgot I had started this thread.
I don't actually know if it cystitis. I amd rinking a lot of fluids, yet not going frequently or feeling like I need to go frequently. The burning feeling is only at the end of my wee(sorry, TMI)but it's quite dark and has an odd smell. Not a bad smell, like you get with an infection, just na odd smell!

Sounds like you need to see the doctor - there are a few things that could be making your urine smell weird or be dark in colour when you are drinking plenty fluids (not that I can think of what any of them might be right now!)

Worth taking a sample in to get checked out.

LazyLinePainterJane · 14/06/2008 18:09

Is it an awful bout of cystitis?

I have found that if it is not so bad I can get rid of it by drinking shit loads of water, so that when I feel like i need to go to the loo, I actually need to go, IYSWIM.

noddyholder · 14/06/2008 18:10

a pint of lemon barley and parcetomol is really effective

notcitrus · 15/06/2008 13:15

The stuff from the chemist in sachets is just bicarbonate of soda with lots of flavouring to make it taste 'nice'. It makes your urine alkaline so it doesn't sting and the bugs can't grow.

So you could try a heaped teaspoon of bicarb in some water or yoghurt - I admit it tastes disgusting but at least it's dirt cheap! I do that every couple hours, and drink a litre of water an hour, and essentially retire to the loo with a good book.

If I'm not feeling better in 4-6 hours it's time to get antibiotics from the doc (I actually have a stash at home now, as I was so prone to UTIs and got complications frequently).

Let me know if you find anywhere selling unsweetened cranberry juice - the sugary stuff will just make things worse. The cranberry extract capsules are supposed to help but are expensive.
