Has anyone taken Tranexamic acid, any side effects and did it help?

I am currently on about week 4 out of 5 of bleeding when up until now I’ve been a regular every 28 days for 5 days type

Had a docs appointment today and they prescribed Tranexamic acid, although he put the fear into my with side effects and said to go straight to A and E if I felt in any way unwell on it. While I feel crap with the bleeding I don’t want to swap it for a worse scenario!

Just looking to see if anyone has taken it with no issues?

Otherwise I am generally well, take levothyroxine for thyroid issues and I’m a bit fat 😂 but healthy enough.

It’s a very safe medication to reduce blood flow. However you need to get that bleed checked out which I’m sure you are. Might be fibroids or something and then you can get them treated

SirChenjins · 15/01/2026 14:52

No side effects - it was great, really reduced my perimenopausal floods. Do you know why you're bleeding so much though - are they doing any investigations?

BigCheeseWheel · 15/01/2026 14:53

Oh that is good to know. The doctor made a huge deal about blood clots.
He said once the bleeding stops to come back for swabs and an internal exam. So think stopping it is the first step. Thank you!

I suspect it is a perimenopause thing with me, I’m 48 next month and think I have just been lucky with no other symptoms or anything until now.

Great stuff. Works very quickly. I’ve never needed more than 2. Not suitable for long term use though. Are you on the neverending waiting list for gynae? I’ve been on one for 18 months now. They sent me a choose and book letter, but none of the 5 places were accepting patients as their lists were full so I had to join a waiting list to get onto the proper waiting list. 🧐

SpikeGilesSandwich · 15/01/2026 16:17

I had it briefly but it made me feel really sick.
I’d definitely recommend giving it a try though, if it suits you, it could be great.

Can I ask why it's not suitable for long-term use @TheHedgehogCannotBeBotheredAtAll ? One of my DDs was prescribed it for very heavy periods that were disrupting her schooling (bleeding through clothes regularly and having to come home etc) she's been taking it intermittently for a couple of years but wasn't told anything about avoiding long-term use.

@BigCheeseWheel DD has had no side effects and it's made a huge difference to her. She takes less than the recommended dose

BigCheeseWheel · 15/01/2026 16:26

Thanks all. Sounds positive! I have a really busy work day tomorrow so I will take first dose as soon as I get home tomorrow that way if I do get any side effects I can just be at home all weekend but hopefully it will work quickly! 🤞🤞

That sounds rubbish @TheHedgehogCannotBeBotheredAtAll I hope you get an appointment through soon. That’s an awful wait!

I’ve been prescribed it for flooding during perimenopause too and it’s been a godsend. My prescription says to only take it for a max of 4 days at a time so I have found if I take it too early I get bad flooding after those 4 days if my period wasn’t quite finished but compared to the almost constant heavy bleeding I had before it’s a life-changer. I was housebound at times with how bad it was.

I’m waiting on a scan for fibroids too just to check and I had blood tests done which showed my iron was low, not anaemic but low enough that I had to go onto iron tablets as well. I didn’t realise the fun and games being in my 40s would bring. 🙈

Kingdomofsleep · 15/01/2026 16:35

I take it for three days each month, no side effects at all. It works within hours and I get flooding if I forget a dose. I only take it when menstruating.

It's can be used as life saving medication for haemorrhages too, it's really good stuff.

Namechange568899542 · 15/01/2026 16:38

It didn’t make any difference for me but equally didn’t have any undesirable side effects either

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 15/01/2026 16:42

I take it - 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. It works fast but I find it more effective overall if I start it as soon as I start to bleed, not only on the heavy days like the packet says. I don't have side effects and have never been told not to take it too much! I have adenomyosis and heavy periods that leave me stranded at home and it does help.

BigCheeseWheel · 15/01/2026 20:41

Thanks so much everyone. This has been really reassuring Smile

Wonderful drug. I have been taking it for a couple of years as needed for peri heavy periods. It starts acting withint half an hour for me. No side effects.

Trotula · 15/01/2026 21:04

I used tranexamic for exactly the same reason some years ago and found it a life saver. I had really sudden heavy bleeding and would flood, often within 30 mins of using largest tampon. Particularly difficult at night too.
I was very careful in how I used them and found I could fairly accurately predict how long they would be effective so could manage how many I took per day.
They work by increasing the blood clotting so there’s obviously an increased risk of it causing clots eg in the eye where arteries and veins are very narrow. Read the leaflet carefully and follow the dosage instructions. (Not an hpc)

I got a Mirena coil. No periods at all. Bliss.
