Dental extractions in children

DD is 7 and had to have 4 teeth out today under GA.
We're cutting out all juice, sweets etc. but I'm perplaxed as her diet is no different to her brothers and he has always been fine.
I feel so guilty and want to make sure this doesn't happen again.
She brushes twice a day, hates minty toothpast so has a lower flouride one. Any suggestions for a non-minty higher flouride one?
Dh puts her to bed and doesn't always brush for the full 2 mins so I've bought a timer.
Anyone else having similar problems?

why did she have to have 4 teeth out not really? Were they milk teeth?

notreallyhappening · 12/06/2008 21:52

Yes, they were milk teeth. I had read that they just left milk teeth but she developed an infection under one so dentist recomended extraction.

DS2 has weaker teeth than ds1 and I don't care what the dentist says I know he has. They say that's not true and it's sweets etc.. but like your dd he has similar if not better diet and is the best at brushing.

I know cheese is good after a meal. Also not brushing too soon after eating.

I read that recently, I had previously thought that we should brush any sugar off as possible but that's incorrect isn't it?

I have struggled to find any toothpaste which isn't mint-flavoured. I think the Arm & Hammer one might not be mint, but not sure. None of mine like mint, but have had to learn to grin and bear it.

How about getting her to use a mouthwash as well as a safeguard? The Dentyl one is good and they do a cherry flavour.

yes the acids are still on the teeth.

chewing sugar free gum with xylitol is good for the teeth too.

I am obsessed by my children's teeth as mine are so crap (and so are DH's). DS (aged 9) told me today that he's one of the only children in his class who hasn't had a filling, which I found quite .

FWIW, I don't keep fizzy drinks in the house and they only have juice or squash a couple of times at the weekend. They drink water or milk at every mealtime. They do eat sweets but I tend to let them eat them all at once (e.g. from a party bag), so they're not hanging around forever. I also stand over them when brushing teeth as have discovered they either don't bother, wet the brush without brushing or brush without paste! I;m prepared to do this for quite some time - I know they'll thank me for it, especially if they avoid root canal treatment

My kids are crap in many other respects but teeth seem to be going OK at the moment!

You could consider flouride suppliments, if you don't live in an area where the water has flouride added. (French children comonly have flouride supliments IME)

Some chldren have stronger teeth than others. A brother can have much stronger teeth than his sister, for example. I may be just bad luck that your DD has weak teeth.

zog I stand over my two as well and they're 7 and 10. Sadly I share care with exdh and I don't think he's so vigilant.

My ds1 had to have approx 8 removed under GA when he was 6.He had abscesses[sp].I was mortified as have always had a thing about teeth.Dentist said some people are predispossed to them.I have had lots over the years and my dad did.The dentist said to drink juice with a meal and water between meals. Also not to clean teeth for an hour after fruit juice/fruit.A timer is a really good idea.We had one for a while. He is really good about brushing his teeth. But tbh,he was always fine with it and didn't ingest vast amounts of sugary stuff..

zog · 12/06/2008 22:07

At least they're brushing properly when they're with you though. Think mouthwash is probably a good idea for not so great/thorough brushers as well.

Doobydoo · 12/06/2008 22:08

OO yes he uses mouthwash too.Good idea.

At 7, she is old enough for an electric tooth brush, but make sure it's a plug in to charge one, not a battery one.
