Piles and anal tag worry

Pannypoo · 13/01/2026 17:11

I just wondered if anyone can reassure me?
I have had what I think are external piles for over 10 years. They don’t really go back in now but I have no pain and even though they are very ugly I am not that bothered by them. I have now got a large skin tag hanging out as well! I have years of problems, such as IBS, constipation and a bad labour years ago, so I’m putting it all down to that. I’m not bothered about it being there and like I say I have no problems whatsoever but I have recently googled it’s so bad to have external piles and they might rupture and I will get sepsis blah blah blah. I have got severe health anxiety anyway and I guess I just want someone to say they have the same thing, to make me feel better because otherwise I am not going to sleep! 😩

No answers OP…but I’ve got the same issue and have had for around 20 years. Quite regularly one will ‘burst’ and there’s loads of blood (sorry…TMI!).

I have tried all kinds of creams and suppositories to no avail!

I also asked my GP for surgery at one point, as the ‘burstings’ were daily. Quite grim! But he said no as the NHS in my area no longer do this kind of surgery.

Not sure what my options are now (I can’t afford private treatment).

Solidarity though 🫶🏻

Thanks for replying. There’s no way I’m going to the doctors but I’m a nervous wreck and I haven’t really thought much about the piles until I got this skin tag and then I have been googling for weeks now for hours on end and it basically said I would get gangrene and bleed out😬 but if you have had yours for 20 years I feel a bit better. Are yours skin coloured and do you not get any other symptoms apart from the odd bleed? Also do you have any skin tags? I am trying to convince myself that’s what it is anyway because I had it in my head it could be cancer but after having a word with myself I think it would be a skin tag after all the trauma my bum hole has been through 🙈😂

Can’t believe I’ve found this post.

I’ve had piles on and off for years. A result of pooing several times a day.

Had a fistula when 6 months pregnant and had to have surgery which sorted it. That was 35 years ago.

Anyway, 6 months ago I noticed something dangling down there. Didn’t know what it was so booked a gp appointment who thought it was a polyp.

It’s actually gotten bigger and although I have no pain it’s troublesome wiping.

I’m booked in for surgery to have it removed next week. General anaesthetic and maybe one night stay.

63 and don’t want anything just hanging out plus I think it’s best to have it removed as some polyps can turn cancerous. Better safe than sorry.

Make an appointment with your gp and get it checked out. It will ease your mind. They’ve seen it all before. I did worry so much about it when I first found it, I was away on holiday at the time and put off making a gp appointment for a few weeks when back home. I’m so pleased that I went to my gp.

Only thing I’m anxious about now is the general anaesthetic but I did stumble upon a thread on here with people saying it was the best sleep they’d had.

I’ll keep you updated.

Very very unlikely you'll get sepsis and die from an piles or skin tags.

Pay attention to your diet. Lots of fibre and water. Don't strain on the toilet. And then it'll be even less likely.

Pannypoo · 13/01/2026 19:13

CakeLady62 are you having the surgery because your GP recommended it or is it because you requested it? I know I should go and will pluck up the courage at some point but for now I’m just trying to ease my mind about it. Thank you for replying😊

i know i am pathetic, but when I say I have health anxiety i mean it’s through the roof. I guess I was hoping for a bit of reassurance as everything I have been googling is about people who have had this problem for a couple of weeks and not years. and I wanted to know if other people had experienced the same thing just to put my mind at rest I suppose😫

@Pannypoo

I discussed it with my gp and she did the referral straight away.

I was seen by the consultant within a couple of weeks and he said it was better to have it removed.

I had a patch of skin on my leg that was red and not healing and went to my gp about that in April last year. She said it was nothing to worry about but I insisted on a referral to a dermatologist. Turned out to be skin cancer which was treated with chemo cream. I also had 2 small surgeries at the end of last year to have BCC removed.

The thing is it is better to get things checked out as soon as possible or when you feel ready. It does save the worrying.
