Right there, there was an article posted in the Billings Daily Gazette that showed that if you exposed your children they never got smallpox, so that shows it must be true!

& what's wrong with the Billings Daily Gazette? I'm sure it's a thoroughly worthy organ...

bubble99 · 24/01/2005 18:13

Don't get too comfortable. There's a hint of horror movie ending here......the thread quietens down.....then suddenly.....across the country.......pc's spontaneously switch on and there she is......aaaaaaagh!

Jimjams · 24/01/2005 18:13

It's a shame becuase if she'd stopped ranting she would have found out that there are quite a few people on here who have either not vaccinated, or have only vaccinated wiith certain things or whatever. For the first time everon mumsnet I completely lost interest in a vaccination argument.

I don't think she's mad for not vacccinating but I wonder why she had such a burning desire to convert everyone (just to reiterate I'm not interested in converting anyone to my pov- just don't want to be accused of being selfish for not vaccinating- that is my only aim- just in case I get tarred with the same brush).

CarrieG · 24/01/2005 18:13

Oh yeah, I'm quite sure she's not gone far.

bubble99 · 24/01/2005 18:14

If 'she' is indeed a 'she'

Well, I had ds vaccinated but I'm certainly not entirely convinced it's always the best thing to do for all children jimjams - think there's definitely room for continued investigation into the possibility of adverse reactions, at the very least.

But (as others have said) I rather objected to the selective & emotive ranting which if anything was likely to do her 'cause' a disservice...not to mention the evasion of direct questions about her assumptions.

Still, she possibly acted as a useful catalyst in highlighting an important & ongoing debate, I suppose.

WigWamBam · 24/01/2005 18:19

jimjams, I don't think she's mad for not vaccinating either - but a reasoned argument and more sensitive handling of people's opinions might have meant that she'd have been listened to, and a sensible debate might have ensued.

happymerryberries · 24/01/2005 18:20

Jimjams. The saddest thing is that lots of people were posting, saying, 'look we agree with your stance but you are getting on people's nerves' and she seemed incapable of reading any of it......possibley due to her cut'n paste habit.

Extremism isn't going to get any one (on either side) anywhere.

Jimjams · 24/01/2005 18:21

I agree about the disservice carrieg Pity really. I don't understand why it mattered so much to her what other people choose to do- i can understand peopoe getting annoyed when their choice is criticised, but I really don't understand why it mattered so much to her that other people did things differently.

Jimjams · 24/01/2005 18:21

I am agreeing with you all here btw!

happymerryberries · 24/01/2005 18:24

I think the thought that you could decide one thing for your own child, while accepting that someone else has a valid reason for doing differently with their child threw her a bit. Dare I say it, almost unhinged her. She couldn't see any gradadtions, just right and wrong, black and white.

To my mind the ideal solution would be able to target those at risk from vaccination, they miss them and the rest of us get our kids done. That way non-vaccinated kids would be protected by herd immunity.

That sort of argument seemed to be beyond her, either that or she had a martyr compex

I think there was lots of people banging their head against a brick wall, mine included.
I don't think the message got through to her that all people are different and are capable of making and reserching for themselves the vaccinations.
Anyhow hope it does dies down.
I got a feeling she will be voicing her opinion on other poor suspecting parents on other forums soon though.

MistressMary · 24/01/2005 18:37

Oops sorry will leave this one too, just seen your post where's my froggy.

happymerryberries · 24/01/2005 18:37

Pixeifish, not sure how that question cropped up, but anyway....

Children get some antibodies at birth (?ooh not sure? ) and they will get more when they are breast feed. These only 'last ' a short time. To get 'proper' antibodies they either need to a. get infected or b. get vaccinated. That way they will produce memory cells that will give long term protection against diseases (this is a vast generalisation btw). But this is why you tend to get diseases one time only.

But you don't inherit them in the same way you inherit, say blue eyes.

Jimjams · 24/01/2005 18:38

do you mean things like immunity to measles pixiefish? yep- but it only lasts half a year/year at most.

Or do you mean suscppetibility to different diseases? yes again- but that's a bit more complicated

happymerryberries · 24/01/2005 18:40

Thanks jimajams, put nice and succincly.
