I’ve just been prescribed it for bad back pain. Has anybody taken it? Did it work well and did you suffer any side effects?

Yes I was on it after knee replacement as couldn’t tolerate morphine

Found it very effective but only ever took it at night and would never have risked it in daytime

Hope it helps you

Yes I’ve taken it.
It made me feel a bit nauseous at the start so maybe don’t take it after a heavy meal! But it was fine. I was prescribed two tablets (can’t remember what strength,30mg maybe each?) but stated with one and then upped to two.
it’s on the black list for prescribing on most formularies as it has limited evidence to be better that mild opiates or nsaids, so it’s not commonly prescribed in the UK unless you are contraindicated for nsaids (kidney disease etc)

Thank you, I have been prescribed 3 tablets 3 times a day. I think I’ll start with 1 and see how I go.
They seem to be effective for those who take it but I keep seeing people saying they got dizzy with it and that’s the last thing I want. Glad it worked ok for both of you.

I was prescribed for bad back pain. I took it at night as pain so bad I couldn't get to sleep. I would not take in morning as it made me drowsy and helped me to sleep.

Thanks for the tip, mine is back pain too. I’ll try it at night.

I'm on it now for for lower back and hip pain linked to a chronic illness. It helps with the pain but isn't as effective as stronger opioid-based painkillers I've had before, but I wanted to avoid those because of other medications I'm on. I threw up the first time I took it but now okay.

Thanks so much, I’ve got it for pain due to a back condition. I haven’t taken it yet, I’m always so wary of new medication so was interested to see if people experienced side effects. I could cope with throwing up once if it helps the pain.

I like it now. The only down for me is that between doses, I do get significant pain return because it isn't as strong as drugs I've taken previously but most of the time it keeps pain at bay and doesn't wipe me out as much as morphine, tramadol etc.

Chataigne · 16/01/2026 23:48

I can't take opiods and was prescribed it in A & E and then post op. Worked well for me - no side effects at all and I'm a champion vomiter and suffer with dizziness.

Oh I’m so glad you said this, I suffer with dizziness too and that was my fear after reading side effects. I think I’d rather have pain than be dizzy! It’s good to hear it doesn’t do that to you.

Do you take 3 a day? Thats what I’ve been prescribed but I’ll start with 1 and build up. I specifically asked for one that won’t make me drowsy or wipe me out.

DH was previously prescribed this as he cannot take many other pain relief medications, but it started to cause urinary retention for him so he stopped using it.

scotlands · 17/01/2026 07:03

I was prescribed it after an operation as was in a lot of pain and had already maxed my dose of the usual. I was violently ill. Of course that’s just me and everyone will react differently
