Am freaking out because my mum has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes today.
I know her mum had it and found out today her grandad also had it - does this mean l am going to get it? I carry weight around my middle and am overweight but am trying to do something about that. Had my hbac1 done last year and wasn't pre diabetic or anything but am worried.

There’s a genetic tendency but it’s not inevitable. My DH was diagnosed during Covid and it turns out there is a wider family history we knew nothing about. He’s very well managed with weight loss and low carb diet though - initially with no meds but he now takes a statin. His hba1c has remained in the non diabetic range for 5 years. We found the Caldesi cookbooks very helpful for overhauling our diet ( reverse your diabetes/ diabetes Weightloss cookbook). Perhaps it’s something you can support your mum with and improve your future health at the same time? I’d strongly suggest you heed the warning and encourage your Mum to do the same - we have seen others diagnosed the same time decide to take the meds and keep the lifestyle and that is not pretty in the long run. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. My mum has always had a healthy diet so l wonder if it might be an age thing as she is the other side of 80 now - she does enjoy a glass of red wine most nights and has put on a fair amount of weight in the last couple.of years as she isn't as active as she used to be.

It’s linked to fat accumulation around/in the pancreas and liver, and becoming insensitive to insulin. I guess at 80 she will find it harder to overhaul her lifestyle and might be advised to take the medication and just manage it. My DH was 45 so he has hopefully 40 years of trying to avoid complications.

I got close to the prediabetic zone a couple of years ago. I changed my diet and now am in the healthy range. The NHS had a course at the time which was good, it needs to be a permanent change to your diet.
