Hi everyone

My son got his removable braces yesterday, and today's been a more consistent day of wearing them however he's finding it impossible to eat with them in so I told him to take them out and put them back in when he's done.

However he's in so much discomfort when eating even with them out he says his teeth are sore and he's struggling to eat 😢 is this normal? I hate seeing him struggling with this and would appreciate any advice especially if you've had kids go through the same. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel for him with this pain? I've of course given him paracetamol but he's a poor soul.

Thanks in advance x

Completely normal. It will be better in a few days.

Are they Invisalign?

You're not meant to eat with them in.
Teeth will ache for 48-72 hours but then the pain should subside.

No not invasalign. He's got one that has a spring behind his front tooth to push it forward. But I just wasn't sure what was normal pain wise. His orthodontist did say if he's really struggling he can remove it, the plate and metal kind of sit between his teeth aswell so it's impossible for him to bite down lol.

Yes, it is awful. I went through it several times with my child. I had one myself and remember it being slightly uncomfortable but not to that extend. It will soon be over but it still not nice.

Not sure about removable, but DS struggled for about a week once his fixed brace went in.
And for a day or 2 after every adjustment.

Ds1 took about a week to settle into his twin block braces, (and about a month to lose the lisp it gave him). He had pain and could only eat very soft foord for about 3 days and then it gradually eased until he forgot about it. It will get better.

Now he has fixed braces and hasn't suffered even a day of pain.

I had braces as a child and the pain and discomfort were terrible when braces were changed. It will get better but it’s tough initially. If he can see it through it will be worth it.

Thisisnotmyid · 09/01/2026 22:35

Yes normal unfortunately. It will get better eventually. Plently of soft foods and regular pain relief. Nights were the worst I found

My child has one of these and he found it painful eating for the first few days. He takes it out to eat as he can’t bite properly with it in. It’s made a massive difference in just a couple of months.

Same as my son, he can't get a full bite down so finds it so difficult especially with the discomfort! That's so good to know though thank you

Give pain relief. It will ease.

sugardust90 · 10/01/2026 22:41

My son has a cut and damage to the tissue behind his front teeth where the appliance sits. It's causing him a lot of pain so I've decided to tell him to remove it until we can get an appointment. It's quite nasty looking no wonder he was in so much pain
