Peri meno and eyesight

Looking for experiences. I go annually to the opticians and am going soon.

I'm 45 and have noticed some deterioration in sight. Just wondered if its common as a side effect of peri?

I've been short sighted since I was 5, was probably around -9 by the time I was 18. Then just minor change since then, am just over -10.

It has always felt like I've not much needed a change in prescription in eye tests, just to get a tiny improvement.

Whereas now I feel like 3 metres ahead is blurred and its come over a month or so, as I noticed I can't read the train timetable boards today, unless I look out my side eye and then it's clear.

Wondering if I'm tired.

Following, as I’ve had a drastic decrease in eyesight almost over night!

youalright · 07/01/2026 18:57

I think its just age

BurntBroccoli · 07/01/2026 19:01

My eye prescription decreased from -2.2 to -1.25 as I became more long sighted. Started in proper menopause though in my 50s

Dutchhouse14 · 07/01/2026 19:04

My prescription for my short sight hasnt changed but i now need reading glasses with my biofocal contact lenses!
Im.basically as blind as a bat.
Its so bloomin annoying!

ChinFluff46 · 07/01/2026 19:04

I'm actually starting to freak myself out 😅.

You know when you super tired and you do thousand yard stare and aren't focused on anything, its like that. Except I can't switch focus mode back on.

I do suffer with migraine and just ate two biscuits in an empty stomach, I'm sugar sensitive so maybe I triggered the visual disturbance.

I'm also wearing contacts for the first time in a month, but normally they make my vision crystal sharp.

I wonder if I've been staring at my phone too much 😣

I’ve also got fairly severe myopia. I’m -8.75. I’m a few tired older than you. I had some vitreol detachment at about 47 and I’ve started to need reading lenses. It’s challenging to be short sighted and to start needing readers.

However, I would recommend you get a check at the optician. Severe myopia makes you more prone to retinal detachment. Cataracts will impair vision and then there are things like glaucoma and macular degeneration (particularly with you seeing better from peripheral vision), that you really should get checked out quickly.

ChinFluff46 · 07/01/2026 19:09

I'm definitely blind as a bat too and getting worse 🤣.

I felt like the optician gave up on me when she was doing my contact lenses, she said you're never going to get perfect vision, something to do with the shape of my eye. On the plus side I get a £15 complex lens voucher toward the most hideously expensive glasses you can imagine.

I'm decreasing my contact lens use a lot, as I wore them too much - special days and swimming mainly now.

Thanks - I may see if I can Saturday or next week. Its been on my November list for a while.

I was very carefree and took my eyesight for granted for many years.

I feel like extra shortsighted people should get reminders from the NHS. I moved a lot and for a long time it was only I broke a (hard) contact lens every 3-5 years that I'd have an eye test. I honestly didn't realise how important it was or how much the technology had moved on in terms of what the optician tests.

Good luck - will you come back and let us know how you get on? I'm also -8 ish and pretty sure I'm peri, noticing some days my vision feels well off. Reading glasses help but I wonder if my short prescription would be better being changed.

SpringIsComingSoonFolks · 08/01/2026 07:50

This thread is prompting me to book a long overdue eye test. Thank you!

You wear contact lenses for swimming? Shock
You are at risk from a nasty eye infection if you do that.

EBearhug · 08/01/2026 08:02

It's probably just age and just happens to coincide with peri. Men go through the same thing, sight-wise. I noticed that if I'd been staring at my phone or screen a long time it was noticeably slower to readjust to looking at more distant things, when once it was instant (although even earlier, it was just not clear until I got glasses and later had my eyes lasered.)

But you should always go to the optician if you detect any changes, and it's good to go every other year anyway.

TheTwenties · 08/01/2026 09:38

I had 20/20 vision until I hit peri. Distance is still much better than average but close up is terrible. I struggle to read food packaging even with glasses - particularly white on any colour. I can’t wear my glasses to stand or walk around or they make me feel sick so they go on off on off all day long which drives me insane.

No, only with fully sealed goggles over them, no water ever gets in my eyes, not a drop.

I'm -10, and not sure I'd be able to do front crawl in glasses.

Yes I've been thinking about getting a blue light filter for my screens. Need to get onto that.

I've also noticed a huge decrease in my eyesight recently (am 45) and the optician said it was age. Im longsighted and have needed reading glasses for years but am now at the stage where I can't actually read anything without my glasses on. Im actually finding it kind of scary as I've always been able to get by before. My eyes also blur really easily if ive been using screens too much. Im not very good at taking screen breaks.

IsabellaGoodthing · 08/01/2026 11:34

Everyone becomes more long sighted in the 40s.

This is normal for men and women. Most humans need readers from late 40s as the eye muscles stop adjusting the lens as well. And no you can’t walk round in reading glasses. You can try varifocals.
