Fell on arse/fanny - when to get checked out?

I fell slap bang on my arse on Jan 3rd. Walking on moors, slipped on ice and straight onto a flat boulder. It seems to have been primarily my undercarriage/left gluteous area that took the brunt but it's still really sore. It feels very swollen in the arse/vulva region. Also painful to squat or sit up in bed (have to be flat or sitting in a seat) I'm taking ibuprofen and paracetamol regularly. It's probably too soon to go to a GP. I've never hurt myself like like though! It doesn't feel like it's improving but it's only been 3 days. I'll probably take longer to heal right? I felt like I was going to faint from the pain immediately after it happened and I'm quite stoic usually.
Any advice?

A little but barely I'd say.

I would get this checked personally. It's possible you've damaged your pelvic bone, and at the very least the GP might be able to advise a clear pain plan if it's going to take a while to heal.

oldslyfox · 06/01/2026 15:33

Go to the doc. Don't hang about worrying over embarrassment - it is very easy to injure your bits in a fall like that, specially the lower back/tendons and such (depends on the way you fell). Most likely it is nothing, but please be sure.

Shouldbedoing · 06/01/2026 15:38

Always worth checking you haven't broken anything

TeaRoseTallulah · 06/01/2026 15:39

Definitely get checked out.

IfIwasabluebird · 06/01/2026 15:40

Get an x-ray. It could be badly injured.

ehb102 · 06/01/2026 15:41

I have seen my osteopath for this kind of thing because I have been known to need joints manipulating after impact, particularly hips after jumping. A GP is unlikely to be able to help with that kind of thing IME

Fibrous · 06/01/2026 15:43

Could you have landed on your coccyx? That’s pretty painful. I remember from my learning to snowboard days. Should be fine after a couple of weeks if so.

This isn’t something I’d go to the doctors for but I’m a fell runner and fall all the time. I give most things a couple of weeks.

ElBanana · 06/01/2026 16:25

I had a similar fall at the start of December. I did pass out and have probably herniated a disc.

The first 2 weeks were absolute hell. I saw a GP who referred me to a physio who advised that as long as there is no numbness anywhere I should take pain relief and try as much gentle movement as possible for 2 weeks when the worst of the inflammation would have gone.

Since then the physio has been able to properly assess the damage that has been done and has given me exercises to strengthen the surrounding area and allow the herniation to (hopefully) lessen.

If you have any numbness, bladder or bowel weakness you need A&E though.

KatParr · 06/01/2026 16:44

Thanks for responses. I think my bladder might be irritated because I'm peeing more than normal - possibly! I'll give it another few days.

To add, it doesn't feel like lumbar/lower back as I have weakness there and know what that feels like. It's definitely more underneath.

Coycx
maybe.
I did similar a few years ago I didn’t feel the pain straight away till about 1 day later
felt like someone was putting a red hot poker up my ass every time I tried to get up or sit down

took months to actually heal and feel better

unsync · 06/01/2026 17:42

I fell backwards onto my sit bones, mainly the right one, when trying to help my aged parent up from their fall about ten days before Christmas. Going upstairs, sitting etc was painful for about ten days, but OK now.

That is monumentally risky. If this post is real then get it all checked urgently.

Absolutely
'Cauda Equina'?
Honestly you need to get yourself checked out without anymore delay

stichguru · 06/01/2026 18:17

I would say a bruise might take a good couple of weeks to clear. However getting it checked to make sure it is just a bruise would also be sensible.

Why wouldn't it be real!? Cauda equina is highly unlikely. I have no numbness, no urinary or faecal incontinence. I can still pass both. Honestly, this is just peak mumsnet- suspicious over-reaction! If it doesn't improve in the next couple of days, I'll get it checked.

You asked when to get checked out, and I would say the time is now. Better to be checked today/first thing tomorrow and be told all is ok and you've just taken a nasty bop than wait on a potential problem and make it worse.

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 06/01/2026 23:37

I would personally go to an urgent treatment centre / minor injuries unit if you have one near you rather than the GP, and sooner rather than later. I certainly wouldn't wait days - I would go in the morning.
