Achy muscles, joints and palpitations

I'm going to preface this with the fact I'm perimenopausal so am aware it could be hormones especially as I am probably around ovulation in my cycle now, so possibly a lot of the symptoms are to do with this.

Last night in bed. I felt awful. Laying trying to sleep, I suddenly felt achy all over, pain in various parts of my body (muscles, joints and just very fatigued).

These symptoms slightly panicked me but i tried to sleep although this morning after waking, they're still here. Just a general feeling of malaise, with strange aches in various areas and my heart was racing as I got up from lying down.

I've had episodes of panic and anxiety recently that I know are definitely hormones, and I'm always thinking most of my symptoms these days are mostly perimenopausal 😅😳 but I don't want to rule anything else out.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. 😊

What are you taking? HRT, supplements?

NooNooHead · 04/01/2026 09:27

Not taking anything at the moment as I feel worried about how HRT might exacerbate my (medication induced) movement disorder symptoms. I am quite sensitive to medication side effects unfortunately 😔

I know that I probably should be on HRT- I've been perimenopausal for about 5 years and this is the first time I've felt achy like flu type symptoms.

Could be viral maybe? Achey joints, bone pain and crushing fatigue have been a feature of covid every time I've had it.

Low iron, low Vit D, low B12/folate, thyroid issues can all cause joint pain so worth getting checks before assuming it’s just peri.

I’d still consider trailing HRT to see if there’s one that doesn’t affect your other conditions, the benefits for bone protection, reduction in CVD risks, along with the benefits of helping prevent middle age spread/hair loss reducing aches, giving energy etc are worth trying it for.

Good point, I'm going to get some blood tests done if it carries on. I had very low ferritin levels after my youngest daughter was born 5 years ago, so that made me feel tired but not like this.

HRT for all the symptoms is probaby the best course of action, but as I am not 45 yet, I am wondering whether the GP will want to go down that route yet

To start with you should take a magnesium supplement every night before bed. Look for one that has several of the different types of magnesium as they all work in slightly different ways. Take 100% rda for a month and see how you feel

less vital, but also important, start a really good multi vitamin for older people, add enough vitamin d so you are taking 5000 a day (drop it to 2k in the summer) a iron supplement that is stomach friendly and consider fish oils too

if after a month you are still getting the symptoms, go to your GP and ask for thyroid levels, B12 Iron and Ferritin
