I am 41, Hubby 48. We have 1 x 3 year old. (DH has 2 girls from 1st marr - but that doesnt really matter)

Im not taking any contraception as dont want the coil, or pill....so SL is a little slack!

99.9% sure we will not have anymore - life is good, got a great work balance and a little money in the bank each month so able to give our DS a little more.

Although I do have cravings to add to our lovely family I do worry about - starting all over again, trying to juggle 3 yr old and baby, how we woudl manage financially...all he usual things.

Deep down I think a V is the route to go down but it just seems so final. DH is fine about it and would go to the Doc's etc...

DId or does anyone else feel like this?

If there is any chance you will change your mind or regret the decision, do not do it.

How about an implant? Lasts up to 3 years and can be removed sooner if you want another dc.

Any particular reason why you don't fancy a coil or pill?

Hassled · 11/06/2008 22:20

I think if there's even a tiny shadow of a doubt in your mind, just don't do it. See how you feel next year.

expatinscotland · 11/06/2008 22:23

you must be 100% that you NEVER, EVER want to procreate again. for whatever reason.

a vasectomy shouldn't EVER be undertaken with the thought that if you change you mind, you can have it reveresed - this does not always work.

i think your OP demonstrates otherwise and therefore, this isn't the right time to make that decision.

expatinscotland · 11/06/2008 22:31

it seems final because it is.

it's not just contraception. it is sterilisation. it is ending that part of your life forever.

if you read that paragraph and feel relief or think, 'Yeah, i like that idea,' then it just might be the option for you.

otherwise, it isn't.

mumma2cjh · 12/06/2008 22:34

Gosh Im still no clearer!

Pill - poor excuse but was on it but kept forgetting to take it at least twice per month...plus the coil, I just dont fancy it...the inplant I dont think would be offered to me due to my age? Again I dont fancy it.

Deep down I dont think we will have anymore children unless we win the lottery! I really do need to get some contraception sorted as our SL if dire at the moment.

I think I will take the advice of one of you and leave it until next year and reassess then.

I think I will try the pill again and TRY and remember

Will book appoint at docs tomorrow

unless you have a medical condition which is contraindictive (like a history of clots or hypertension) or are a smoker, you can use the combined pill unitl menopause.

or you can take the progesten-only pill.

it's possible you can still use the implant - talk to your GP or your local family planning clinic.

if you don't fancy the coil, don't get it.

there are other alternatives out there.

there needs to be no being unclear when you are considering sterilisation. there needs to be nothing but certainty that it is the right thing for you (or your partner needs to be if he is hte one being sterilised).

morocco · 12/06/2008 23:04

i never fancied the coil but after long chat with nurse, a lot of my worries about it (eg that it prevents implantation but not fertisilisation) were dispelled, it's been fab so far
might be worth trip to whoever it is near you who does the whole 'contraceptive talk' thingie - bit like being a teenager again

emma1977 · 12/06/2008 23:36

You can have the implant at any age- its fab.

Unless you have contraindications to the pill you can restart that. If you are a bit rubbish at remembering to take it, then the patch may suit you better. Its the same as the combined pill, but in a weekly patch- called Evra.
