Long term pain/tender chest

Name changed for the purposes of this post.
For 6 years I’ve had several breast lumps. All checked out ok. Some cysts, some fibroadenomas and some just general glandy, lumpy, fibrous stuff.

The last check up I had I was told by a quite direct male radiographer that I will one day die but it won’t be from breast cancer. So, clearly he thought I was an over anxious time waster. Although my breasts are full of the above mentioned and it’s hard to track what’s new.

For six months now I’ve had a very tender area basically next to my upper, inner rib but it swells slightly and is excruciating if pressed or knocked. I am small chested and late fourties so I can’t tell if it’s breast tissue or rib? I know everyone will say see a dr (I have an appt booked for new year) but I really think I’m a complete time waster following the comment last time I was at the breast clinic. For context, I’ve been on Oestrogel for 2 years and have a mirena.

Could it be a pulled muscle ? I’m unsure where you mean exactly . Could you place it on a body map?

@Plankton89 From the collar bone down it’s underneath the second rib down from there next to the breastbone but not on the breast bone. It’s about 2cm wide. Feels gristly.

Okay so granted my boobs are saggy but that sound a bit too high up to be breast tissue , although we are all different . Could it be something like Costochondritis / cartilage issue ? Sorry not much help!

Just read about “Tietze Syndrome”, maybe something like that

Owly11 · 31/12/2025 15:23

You are completely misinterpreting his comment in my view! He probably meant it cheerfully - that it is great news! If a medic said that to me i would feel so relieved and happy, i wouldn't for a moment think he was saying i was a time waster.

@Owly11 I appreciate your optimism. In its context it felt like I was being dismissed.

I completely understand why you feel dismissed but don't let that one, ill-thought remark put you off seeking reassurance from your doctor. DH was dismissed by medics but DH was right and the medics were wrong, DH paid the ultimate price and I am now a widow. Medics can be as wrong as the next person and the only person fighting your corner is you. Good luck.
