Going through a living nightmare

Over the last 4 weeks I seem to have developed allergies to make up and skin care and I just don’t know what to do, I can’t seem to work out what I am reacting to or what I can use. I’m in a right state about this. I have worn makeup for 30 years and it’s never been a problem before.

Sorry bit I opened this post thinking ‘a living nightmare’ must be cancer or another life limiting illness or condition. Not an allergy to skincare and make up.

I agree with this. She’s obviously had a very sheltered existence to date if this counts as a living nightmare. No sympathy here as a sufferer of severe psoriasis.

I agree that the title is a bit extreme. I do know there are worse problems in the world. I apologise if the title is misleading.

My family and DD have tons of skin allergies. Simple advice in a nutshell:

  • get a sensitive, non-bio washing powder. Wash ALL your bedsheets and clothes in it. NO FABRIC SOFTENER OR ANYTHING ELSE. Then put on a rinse cycle immediately after with nothing but water in it - this will rinse out any remaining detergent.
  • make sure your bedsheets and anything touching your skin is 100% cotton
  • shower (just like warm water, NOT hot water as this irritates allergies and skin) before bed to rinse off any allergens from the day so they don't continue to irritate overnight
  • Take piritin, antihistamines daily. Also use hydrocortisone (over the counter, very mild steroid) can be used for skin reactions
  • Follow these steps, then eliminate all makeup/skincare and gradually introduce them - a new one each day. You should be able to find what's triggering the reaction and eliminate it
  • Go to the doctor for stronger steroids (if hydrocortisone won't work) or allergy testing

That's really helpful...process of elimination.
