Pain on right side of abdomen

Hoping anyone can make suggestions. I will be calling for a GP appt tomorrow as well.
Ive had pain on the right of my stomach for maybe the last year. A CT scan didn’t pick anything up.
The pain is on the right, about two inches right of my belly button, one inch below.
sometimes the pain is not there, but sometimes it is aggregated, and quite painful. The pain is like a burning sensation.
I sometimes wonder if it is muscular as actions like sitting up are painful. Or is there something else there that is just being aggravated by movement. Similarly, I’m in more pain now than I was before eating all the festive foods lying around. Is it being aggravated by foods? Or is it that doing more (days of playing with small children over the holidays).
No real other significant symptoms. I did feel very unwell in Xmas day but put that down to too much rich food.
GP has tried to help, but give the CT scan didn’t show anything, conversations didn’t get much further.
However, I’m now back to being in pain. My imagination is also in overdrive thinking it’s something awful that hasn’t been picked up.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Constipation? Trapped wind? If it is more painful when eating a lot those would be my guesses. Have you tried a hot water bottle or massage and if so did it help? What else have you tried? Otherwise it could be uti/kidney stone/ovulation pain? I think keeping a diary and trying a few things to see what makes a difference will be helpful in getting to the bottom of it.

I’ve had the same, when it first started I thought I had appendicitis but it never progressed into anything and went away by itself.
I still have the pain on and off, ultrasound about 4 years ago was normal, however the my spotted adenomyosis on the last scan (for irregular bleeding) which is likely to have been the culprit all along; it’s notoriously difficult to identify other than post hysterectomy
Have a look and see if that correlates to any of your symptoms and ask for a proper trans vaginal ultrasound and id also mention to the sonographer you’re curious about adenomyosis. I’d never heard of it before.

Obviously it could be lots of other things, just sharing my story.

Gall stones ? Aggravated by rich food. The pain is excruciating. An ultrasound should pick it up though which I assume you had before the CT scan.

Worriedwithquestions · 28/12/2025 13:33

No answers but I have a similar pain, although sometimes more like a stabbing pain, and also sometimes higher up too. Ultrasound ruled out gallstones and didn't show anything re liver, bile duct, pancreas or kidneys. Blood tests showed high bilirubin and weakly positive ANA antibodies but GP thought that might be a red herring. Doesn't seem related to food but possibly to hormones and/or exercise. GP said they are stumped and so am I!

Do you ever feel like you have pain or tightness in your right hip or bum cheek? It could be that your pelvis is out of whack, as that whole area is a musculoskeletal ‘ring’ which could be why you’re feeling it in/near your belly button. I frequently throw my hip out due to scar tissue in the area and my osteopath has explained this to me before.

If you’ve had check ups and have no other concerning symptoms, it might be worth in investigating with an experienced osteopath. He says it’s often referred to as the ‘lifting and twisting’ strain, if that makes any sense to you!

That does make sense, thanks - I do get pain in my right hip and thigh (but not butt), although am not sure how/why my pelvis may be out of whack. Definitely something to follow up though!

Rumbling appendicitis? Pain comes and goes. My friend might have that. He got pain in right area and went to hospital. His appendix was only slightly swollen and he did not have temperature or high cpr (which I had when I had appendicitis). They sent him home and told to come back if pain returns. He has been fine now about three weeks.

I had this a couple of years ago and scans and everything were fine. Did end up having a colonoscopy too as the pain was slighter lower than yours and it showed diverticulosis. Also had swallowing and breathlessness/palpitation issues which turned out to be GERD. I was eating quite badly at the time though, too many crisps and fizzy drinks etc and I do feel that fatty and rich food seemed to make both the pain in my side and the GERD worse. They have both pretty much gone away now that im trying to eat generally healthier.

Hi @Alexandra84 I hope you are okay. Was your GP able to give you any suggestions on what might be causing the pain? I still have mine!

Alexandra84 · 11/01/2026 18:37

Thank you for all the replies. I suppose I’ve been trying to not worry too much, telling myself not to jump to conclusions.
Appt later this week. Weirly, the pain has now gone. Which makes me think it’s related to either monthly cycle, or food?
Am going to track it all in a diary and hopefully make sense of it all.
So weird, it’s like there is now no hint of paint at all.
