I have the Christmas Shits! What on earth can I eat to make them go away?

Good morning and Merry Christmas! Grin

I've had an unpleasant little virus since about the 20th which gave me a churning stomach and a bit of light congestion/sneezing and dizziness, some headache - but the worst part was shitting orange water. I thought I had it under control by basically not eating anything initially (I felt too nauseous) and then just nibbling dry crackers and black tea, and yesterday some kefir drink. I mean, I do need SOME calories to keep me going over Christmas. I kept myself to myself the first few days and missed the 9 Lessons and Carols and the Crib Service that I'd thought I'd go to, as they're packed out. I sent DH to do the big food shop (in which I hadn't the least interest as thinking about food was making me feel sick). I've avoided non-household people. I'm washing my hands and nails a lot and spraying dettol spray on the loo flush and taps, in a forlorn hope that my family won't get it.

I thought 5 days in I'd be a bit better. Yesterday I celebrated feeling quite a lot better by eating my first proper meal (ham, vegetables, cranberry sauce, mash, etc) and had a minute glass of port. Big mistake. This morning I've been running to the loo a lot and the orange water is back. Sad massive amounts of unhappy liquid gurgling from within.

What on earth can I eat?? My grandmother used to swear by a grated apple to stop the runs (I think she thought it was the pectin) and plain boiled rice. We're having rare roast beef and lovely veg today and I just don't think I'm going to be able to manage. Which is making me sad.

We have apples and rice and dry crackers. We have live yoghurt (but is dairy a good idea?) and a bit of kefir left. Do I really have to starve this thing out or is there anything sensible I can feed it that it won't process into something unspeakably unfestive?

Immodium.

Failing that, eggs.

The BRAT diet is correct.

Bananas
Rice
Apple sauce
Toast

Hope you feel better soon.

I agree with your grandmother. I came on here to say apples. After not really eating anything for three days I had two apples yesterday and they appear to have done the trick. I didn't have to get up during the night and nothing has happened this morning either. The crampy gurgling is no more. It may be a coincidence but there may be something in it.

eggs, really? Ok, eggs I can do.

Admittedly I did probably just balls it up with a small plate of roast beef and a couple of potatoes but we will see... Grin thanks for the tip.

for some reason I've never heard of BRAT but three out of those things I've already been doing. Thanks, and I hope you're having a nice Christmas.

My Portuguese grandmother's folk remedy is right, hooray! Hope you've managed to eat something more substantial today and that you're on the road back to normal non-gurgly guts.
