Hand hold- think we will be told of a cancer diagnosis tomorrow

My mum had an x ray done in October following years of hip pain which she avoided investigations. The x ray shown up quite a large hip tumour but appearances seemed like they were benign. 10 weeks later she was seen in orthopaedics after a referral from her GP, we was reassured as the consultants impression was it is likely to be benign but was told she is at risk of fracturing her hip with the lesion. She was sent for an MRI scan, she had the MRI on Wednesday of this week and yesterday the tumour service called to say she needs an appointment with the consultant on Monday. I’m terrified and thinking all kinds especially as all they told Mum on the phone was that it was a fairly urgent appointment and to bring someone with her for support. Has anyone else had experience on their MRI results coming back quickly but it turning out OK?

I'm so sorry OP but the only appointment I've had where I was told to bring someone, is the one where I got my cancer diagnosis. I hope your mum gets better news.

It may be that the tumour is putting extreme stress on something which needs to be sorted ASAP and she needs an op quickly, hence bringing someone if it all needs to be sorted quickly. I'm not an expert though.

Thank you. I think you may be right and especially as mum only had the MRI on Wednesday. Seems a fast turnaround so expecting the worst 🥹 x

Thank you! Your comment has reassured me as that’s what I’ve been trying to keep in the back of my mind as that would warrant urgency. Mum was told originally it was high risk of fracture x

Honestly, sometimes it doesn't matter if a 'lump' is benign or cancerous because of where it is or the size of it. For example, 'benign' tumours in the brain cause issues because they are in a fixed box (skull) so they are occupying space that they shouldn't and there's nowhere else for the stuff that should be there to move to.

So don't necessarily expect cancer, but it sounds like whatever it is, it's causing a problem.

I hope the appointment isn't as difficult as you expect and that they have a plan.

Greybeardy · 21/12/2025 21:16

it may just be that they want to get her in pretty urgently because even benign tumours may need preventative surgery to reduce the risk of fracturing. Like pp said, benign tumours in some places can still generate a quick action plan…hopefully that’s ‘all’ it is.

I had an MRI scan on a Thursday and then had a appointment letter hand delivered (they actually wrote hand delivered on the envelope) put through on the Sunday for an appointment the next day. 😕

I didn't sleep at all but it turned out to be ok. They had found a VERY large cyst on my pancreas.

It sounds like there is important news they need to share which may be difficult to hear. Whatever the outcome they will be able to let you know what the plan is and the next steps.

FurForksSake · 22/12/2025 19:44

I hope you are doing ok with whatever the news was, I just wanted you to know you and your family were being thought of.

hby9628 · 22/12/2025 19:56

I’ve been thinking about you today Op. hope you are all okay.

My DD has benign bone tumours from fiberous dysplasia. She has had them from birth. Its so darn easy to jump to the worse case scenario, I certainly did when Ortho Oncology called me straight after her MRI and asked me to take my DD straight up to the RoH following MRIs, X ray and cat scans from being hit by a car. They needed a surgical oncologist to oversee as they increase her risk of fractures and can cause her a lot of pain. She is under oncology as they have the expertise to manage them and offer surgery and pain blocks as needed and NOT because they are malign. She will be under ortho oncology for life.

Experince has taught me that anything that is potentially worrisome the NHS acts fast and sends you straight to the surgeons with the knowledge to be able to check, explain and put together a plan to help.

Hoping for the best outcome for your mum.
