Wisdom tooth - will antibiotics stop the pain?

Wisdom tooth is impacted, I'm waiting to have it out but have another month or so to wait. The pain is horrible when it flares up.. it looks infected. Got an emergency appointment on Monday where I'm hoping they will give me antibiotics.. but will these help with the pain? It makes me panic , not experienced tooth pain like this. Christmas is going to be miserable 😞

They'll help with the pain if it is infected (by reducing the infection and any swelling) but if it's nerve pain caused by the impaction they won't do much I'm afraid. Ice packs might help more, and if they won't prescribe a stronger painkiller you should be able to buy ibuprofen with codeine over the counter at a pharmacy which you can keep for when it flares up.

Poor you. Dental pain is the absolute pits and painkillers just don’t seem to touch it. I had to have a tooth out just before Christmas a few years ago. I’d had an extraction a year previously which was fine so didn’t think too much of it. But this one ended up with dry socket and I was in agony.

My dentist prescribed metronidazole and told me to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen and use numbing gel together with very careful salt water rinses.

The pain improved massively within a couple of days and I could eat my Christmas dinner! No alcohol though because of the antibiotics.

I hope you feel better soon.

In short no. Antibiotics don’t get rid of pain. If you have an infection they will treat the infection which may be causing you pain. Growing pains and nerve pain are only treated through pain killers and then dental treatment. I have had impacted wisdom teeth and removing them was the only thing that helped in the end.

Start doing hot salt water mouthwash, 1 teaspoon of salt in boiling water and as hot as you can stand rinse for 1 minute as often as you can. (Don’t bother with mouthwash this is great for pericorinitis) also should your face cheek begin to swell DO NOT put heat against it.
Metronidazole will reduce any infection and pain

I also had a complicated extraction on the 18th December one year...max fax surgeon. Ended up with a dry socket, not even an emergency dentist open and our local hospital doesn't have dental. I ended up with a month of agony.Oil of cloves is your friend,or Anbesol local anaesthetic.

Make sure you use salt mouthwash again frequently after your extraction to hopefully prevent a dry socket ( this occurs when the blood clot has been lost after the extraction)
op is t there an emergency clinic where you live open on weekends?

Oragel helps. They type you buy over the counter is strong and numbs your mouth for a bit. And neurofen with codeine. Antibiotics only help if there’s an infection. My DS had his wisdom teeth out this year and feels so much better now. The pain was awful, he also referred nerve pain in his ears and throat.
