D mannose for uti’s

I frequently suffer with water infections and read online that taking a supplement called D’mannose would help. I’ve been taking one tablet a day (1000g) that I brought from Holland & Barrett for nearly a month. Some days I feel so nauseous I barely eat and the majority of my bowel movements (sorry if this is tmi) have been loose. If you’ve been on this long term can I ask Does it get better and should I persevere or is this my body telling me to stop taking it? I’m asking as I woke up today feeling extremely nauseous and don’t know if I should stop taking them .

I would stop taking it with side effects like that.
I tried taking it for a few months and found it didn't help anyway, so I stopped it.

Do you know what bacteria causes your UTI usually? D mannose only works with E coli.

D-mannose shouldn’t cause loose bowels. It’s completely inert. I used to buy loose powder and, when I had an attack, take a few teaspoons every hour.

I went through a point of being utterly reliant on it, after several failed antibiotic runs.

Could you be allergic to the capsule? Or is there something else in the capsule?
But it sounds like you are directly experiencing loose bowels, just after you’ve taken it say something is going on.

In the end, it turned out my persistent UTIs were because I had a small bladder cancer. Bottom line is you shouldn’t have them all the time, unless you’re engaging in poor sexual health practices, or are in general bad health.

In the first instance, though I would get onto a clean diet. That means lots of fruit and vegetables, no sugar, no alcohol and minimal meat and dairy. Absolutely no processed food.

I’ve just bought this for my cat who keeps getting repeated UTIs. Last cultures showed E. coli which I believe is the bacteria responsible for 80% of UTIs in humans and animals.

I took similar quantities of d-mannose for a few years and didn’t experience that at all. Would it be worth trying a different version of the product? This company sell it in powder form for example? https://www.sweetcures.co.uk/products/waterfall-d-mannose-tablets-1000mg

i did find it helped me though as previous posters have said it works for E. coli infections. I‘M now prescribed a product called Hiprex which has made a huge difference - it would be worth reading up on that.

Good luck - one of many conditions that aren’t well understood and often trivialized.

Thank you to everyone that has responded. My last culture showed strep b so maybe d mannose isn’t the right supplement to take . I have suffered with uti’s for over 30 years . I can go up to a
couple of years uti free and then get them continuous for months . I currently on my 5 uti since July. I’ve been referred to see a urologist but NHS waiting times are long . I was just trying to help myself if I could by taking a supplement as d mannose is recommended a lot on uti forums. I’m really struggling with the nausea so
will stop taking them and see if that helps. I’m currently single so I know it’s not sex related and I never use bath or feminine products so I’ve no idea what is causing the uti’s .

After several UTIs in succession a friend suggested Extract of Cranberry tablets. That was a couple of years ago, and no recurrence. No side effects either. Perhaps worth a try?

Hi, something that helped me was a herbal tincture called Uva Ursi. I have always used the A Vogel brand. It’s saved me from antibiotics many times and I always keep it to hand, though my UTIs have diminished considerably since taking it.

TeamToeBeans · 19/12/2025 07:22

I have had success at fending off UTIs by drinking a mug of warm water with a teaspoon of cream of tartar and a few drops of lemon juice in it. It saves me one particular time when I started with symptoms at the beginning of a bank holiday weekend. I’m sorry it doesn’t answer your question but it might help.

CandyCaneKisses · 19/12/2025 07:24

It might be an inbedded UTI that needs a longer course of antibiotics. Go back to GP while you wait for the urologist.

Mumsknot · 19/12/2025 07:25

D mannose makes me nauseous too so it’s not just you!

Melsy88 · 19/12/2025 07:37

I feel your pain... I've been suffering frequent UTIs and bladder pain for over a year.
I'm now on hiprex, which is like an antiseptic for the bladder. Helps to stop bacteria from surviving. And also Vaginal oestrogen.
Been on both for a couple of months and no UTI in that time (which for me is amazing). No idea which one if helping the most, or if it's both. .

DeQuin · 19/12/2025 07:40

If you've had UTIs for over 30 years I am going to guess you are over 40. Are you on vaginal oestrogen? Game changer. Stopped mine completely I haven't had one since. Even if it is not a magic bullet you should consider it if not already on it stops all kinds of GUM symptoms. Good luck OP.
