Any blood test / anaemia experts out there?

Hello, can somebody help me interpret blood test results please? Everything normal range except haemoglobin which was 118. My notes say "mild normocytic anaemia". I looked it up - of course! - and I saw it said this was usually a symptom of another condition, so of course I am worried. Having another test tomorrow for B12/folate/iron, but from what I can see, deficiency in those doesn't cause that form of anaemia - or can, but not very often. Can anyone reassure me or is it likely there's something else ominous going on? Thank you.

If these were done by your GP haven’t they added any comments. In any event I’d have thought a doctor might be a better bet than Mumsnet, failing that the NHS helpline.

@NellieJean, thanks for taking the time to answer, that was very helpful. I hope it didn't inconvenience you too much or take too much time out of your day.

I wouldn't leap to "ominous". It could just be heavy periods or losing blood due to inflammation.

Nobody is going to be able to interpret that for you on its own which is why you're having more tests, but I don't think there's any reason to be panicking based purely on that test result.

Are you normally a worrier? Why were you having the test?

AngelaPoise · 18/12/2025 17:16

@tumbletoast Not periods. Yes, I am a worrier! The test was for twitchy muscles/electrolyte imbalance originally.

yes, you can still be normocytic with b12/folate/iron problems. A normocytic anaemia doesn't necessarily mean anything terrible. As usual, context is everything, but it sounds like they're starting with some sensible ideas.

@Greybeardy Thank you, that's useful to hear. I know I will just have to wait and see but I am prone to worrying, obviously!
