Appendicitis?

Daughter (6) was discharged from hospital on Friday, after a week long admission. Was originally took down by ambulance with suspected appendicitis, saw the surgical team in a&e who also suspected it, but it was 1am and the reg was in theatre. They didn’t think it needed emergency surgery right there and then, so she went to ward and they said they’d come see her next day to review.

The next morning she had an abdominal xray which showed she was really impacted, surgeons called off and impaction plan started then admitted for a week as daughter has a lot of other health conditions and needed iv glucose as wasn’t tolerating her tube feeds. Discharged Friday evening to continue disimpaction plan as she was finally tolerating tube feeds again.

Were now on 6 sachets of movicol today and tomorrow will be back to 4 (usual dose). Pain has still been there this week but manageable, still not 100% but has been playing and watching tv then tonight has been worse. She’s still complaining of right handed stomach pain, pain in her right side when pressing on the left which is what made them think appendicitis in the first place. She has been impacted a lot in the past, and she definitely was extremely impacted but will say the pain she was describing was a lot different to usual.

Should I still be worried in case it has been appendicitis? Now I’m reading that it is common to feel better for a few days then pain gets worse!

I would take her back in the morning, don't risk her appendix rupturing.

Do you have any idea if she's still impacted or not?

my appendix was removed about 1am. It had never been an issue until that night. Apparently I was very very close to it rupturing & he said it was septic.

Hope DD feels better in the morning xx

When I had appendicitis, it came on feeling tender first thing in the morning, like a tummy bug, I vomited 🤢 a few times during the day. Then about 8pm I was trying to take petid abysmal (pink upset tummy stuff) vomited half of the cap full before getting the second half, then I couldn't stand straight i was doubled in two.
Couple of days before they operated.

No prior warning. It was completely out the blue.

I had painful right sore last Friday and thought I was constipated ( not suffered before) took over the counter stuff which cleared me out Sunday. Still sore Monday to contacted gp

they made me yelp on touch and sent me to hospital, had blood test which in my case showed nasty infection markers

I described the pain/tendernous as beside my right hip and sore to touch, feeling unwell and having temperature and heart rate high

had CT scan which showed perforated appendix

had surgery Monday night by key hole

still in hospital as on antibiotics due to appendix bursting

id get your daughter back in, as the pain on right side doesn’t have to be that bad for appendicitis

I've been in A&E twice with DC, sent by the GP with suspected appendicitis.

Dd2. Pain rated "at least 9/10" couldn't stand due to pain, hardly able to talk. Nearly had to scrape off the ceiling when they touched her.
Ds. Pain rated 2/10, walked in, told them about the pain, winced slightly when they felt.

Dd2 was impacted. Ds had appendicitis, on the verge of rupturing.*

Now I'm advising you to go back and ask to check as there's no way you want to get it wrong. However I am saying that it may be "just" she's impacted.

*This is at least partially the way they react to pain. Dd2's pain threshold starts at about 5 and ds' ends about the same point.

This happened with my DD, a week long hospital stay with stomach pain and vomiting and high infection etc but they managed it with meds even though she had to be tube fed as so unwell. She slowly got better and three months later it happened again. This time her vomit was bright green almost neon and odourless. Plus stomach pain especially when I touched her tummy. Took her to A&E and her appendix had ruptured and she was straight in to surgery as the infection had spread around her stomach. She was very sick and had another week in hospital clearing the infection. She made a complete recovery.

a DR told me the other organs wrap themselves around a damaged appendix to try and help it which is why it didn’t show up in the scan or X Ray. The second time my DD could not walk upright - she could only walk sort of doubled over like a C and that is supposedly a sign of appendicitis??

Trust your instincts and take her back if it gets worse. Hopefully she’s now on the mend.

Thanks everyone. Got an appointment this morning and nurses are coming to the house to take her bloods then the hospital will phone me later if they have went up. They had been fine when we were in last week. She does seem pretty cleared out impaction wise x

That is a very good point, people feel pain differently.

My DS was the same. Pain was very minor and they initially didn't think it was appendicitis but scanned just in case.
