Continuing diarrhoea after suspected food poisoning

Name change for an embarrassing problem.

A bit over 3 weeks ago, we went out for an Indian meal, and the following night I woke up in a sweat and threw up once. Subsequently, I’ve not been sick but have not passed a solid stool since - every one has been type 6 or 7 on the Bristol Stool chart.

I’ve had very mild cramping occasionally but no pain and never any blood, but the need to poo can come on quickly, farting cannot be trusted, and most trips to the bathroom result in some spatter in the toilet bowl. There has been no weight loss.

10 days ago, I went to the doctor who found I had a tenderness at the beginning of my large intestine. I provided a sample and bloods were checked. Both came back with no sign of infection/cause for concern. It was recommended that I eat a low residual diet but that doesn’t appear to have had any real impact apart from being very boring - I like food and have no allergies.

Given that I’ve struggled with mild/medium constipation for some years, this is unusual for me. I’ve got another appointment with the doctor tomorrow but does anyone have ideas about what things I should be discussing as next steps? Can food poisoning trigger IBS on a short or long term basis?

I would start a good pre/probiotic. That should help get everything back to honest should be

I’ve been eating live yoghurt and kefir daily since I was told to eat low residual diet but I maybe need to use some specific supplements to help. My diet previously had a lot of natural prebiotic foods but many of those don’t seem to be compatible with this low residual diet which is very bland 🥲

Yes, food poisoning or a vomiting bug can cause short term intolerances to food. However, three weeks of what you describe seems sensible to get checked out. Hopefully your doctor will have some further advice tomorrow.

I had this after dining out, after nearly four weeks phoned the GP. He prescribed mebevererine. It worked thank god. It's an anti spasmodic which settled my stomach down beautifully.

I’ll make a note of this, thank you 🙏
