Tooth extraction - next day is this normal

I’m looking for some advice. Yesterday I had my upper back tooth extracted. It had a crown that was around 20 years old, and the tooth snapped, so the remaining root had to be removed.

About five years ago, I had a problematic wisdom tooth removed on the opposite side. I experienced some discomfort then, but no real pain or swelling.

This time, once the local anaesthetic wore off, the pain was quite intense. I’ve been taking co-codamol, which has helped. I’ve followed the dentist’s advice by avoiding hot foods and sticking to cold, soft foods. However, before going to bed, something jelly-like came away from the extraction site. Be

This morning I woke up with pain and a swollen cheek. The pain relief is still helping, but not as effectively as yesterday. I’m worried that the jelly-like substance may have been the blood clot. When I feel the area with my tongue, it doesn’t seem like there’s an open hole — it feels covered, which I’m hoping means the clot is still there.

Is it normal to have increasing pain and cheek swelling after an extraction? I just may have been luck before

Try not to poke the hole with your tongue, they should have told you that at the dentist. Could you not make an emergency appointment and get it checked. Dry socket tends to happen more on lower teeth . So hopefully you will be fine .

Were you given information on dry socket?

@TheTwenties I was given information. Was told it can take up to 3 days before it appears. If I have it apparently I will know as it’s the worst pain felt. This is bad, but not the worst.

@Howarewealldoing i am avoiding touching the area with my tongue. Was just feeling to make sure I didn’t have a hole

are you doing salt water rinsing too? It may be soothing to hold some salty water in the area.
generally pain/discomfort would be expected after an extraction. If the pain isn't getting better rather than worse a few days later, call your dentist for a review.

foodlovefood · 14/12/2025 09:46

@SharpOpalDuck not yet. Was told to wait 24 hours. I am now wondering if it’s the swelling that is causing the pain?

Sounds like a dry socket. Intensely painful. Can be packed by your dentist. Id go back asap!

CrowMate · 14/12/2025 09:52

Can you use your phone camera to get a pic of the site, assuming you can’t get a clear view in the mirror. If the clot is there, you’ll see it. Have a look online at some pics of extraction site normal recovery.

i hope its jus swelling and you’re ok.

oustedbymymate · 14/12/2025 09:55

I think the blood clot has come away and you got dry socket which is awful. Make an emergency dentist appointment asap

I had my upper molar removed on Tuesday that had a crown on it. Aside from minor niggles I haven’t had any pain after the first day but I’ve been so careful after having dry socket a few years ago.

I would contact your dentist in the morning.

foodlovefood · 14/12/2025 11:08

@CandyCaneKisses looked in the mirror and compare with online pictures and all looks Ok. I spoke to my dentist on the phone and they said it’s too early for dry socket but think it’s swelling of my cheek. Said to come in if not improving tomorrow

That's good that it all seems normal, sorry you have pain. Get on with the salt water rinsing, it should help. Best of luck!
