Didn’t complete sons antibiotics and now he’s ill again

He was prescribed them on the 24th last month. They were horrendous and he had most of it but he just couldn’t hack them towards the end and threw up whenever he’d have the last few times. He got better so I thought he would be ok and stopped giving it. Nearly two weeks later yesterday he started coughing again. He has a mild temp and he’s been complaining of the bottom part of his arm hurting on his left arm. The doctor was unsure if it was viral or bacterial last time (suspected tonsilitis) so gave antibiotics in case.

my question is it’s been over a week he had his last dose would it be possible to keep giving them and finish them off (medicine still in the fridge) or should I book an appointment first thing.

Right now he’s eating fine and he’s warm to the touch and seems tired which is how it started last time. With the antibiotics being opened two weeks now would they even be ok to have or work now.

I would book an appointment, it could be the start of a different illness x

Don’t retake the antibiotics, he will need a whole new script if he needs them at all. Book a GP appointment on Monday and take it from there

This is why they tell you to make sure you finish the course. I wouldn't give him the remainder of what you already have, it likely won't be enough to get rid of it if it's only a few doses left. You need to get him a doctors appointment and be honest about not finishing the course and why, if he reacted badly to that antibiotic there could be an alternative to try.

Through those leftover antibiotics away, you absolutely can not give them to him now. He needs to see his GP again as it could be something entirely new and different.

That’s the plan. He doesn’t seem to have an active fever when I check his temp but his cheeks are flushed and he’s tired a lot which seems viral. His mouth isn’t hurting like last time and he’s eating fine too but his arm hurting is worrying me. He had a whole week off from school so they won’t be impressed with me pulling him for an appointment but can’t be helped

Don’t even try the old antibiotics.

Make a new appointment Monday, if he worsens go to out of hours GP or A&E tomorrow.

What you should have done when he was vomiting up the antibiotics is double checked the guidance for them. Many of them cause nausea and vomiting if taken on an empty stomach.

If you had followed all the guidance and he was still throwing them up, then you should have taken him straight back to the GP and reported this as an adverse reaction to the antibiotics so the GP could prescribe him a different antibiotic. You should not have kept giving them to him.

He has been shivering and just checked his temp it’s nearly 39 . Gave him Calpol waiting for it to kick in. I’m going to try and get him seen out of hours tomorrow

i hope he is seen quickly. You can take the old bottle in as proof of which antibiotic he was reacting to so they don’t prescribe it or one too similar to it again.

Raisinsandweetabix · 14/12/2025 12:16

I'd take him to out of hours as soon as possible

FuzzyWolf · 14/12/2025 12:17

Even if it’s the same virus, it’s been too long to finish off the course now as he would need the entire course again. Just safely dispose of what you have left.
