Hi I had a dental crown replaced a couple of days however it’s so sensitive I can’t brush around it
It feels like I’m hitting a nerve , I don’t know if this is normal and I need do allow it to settle , I’m going to see how it is on Monday but has anybody else experienced this ? Thanks

Is it a temporary crown or the permanent? I had 4 crowns a few weeks ago. The temporary ones were very sensitive for the full duration (3 weeks), the permanent were sensitive for a week or so.

That’s pretty normal, I’d give it at least a week to settle. Did your dentist offer any advice?

Carmen866 · 13/12/2025 06:24

Thankyou for your replies , it’s a permanant crown & a replacement as the dentist said that by looking at the xray there was bacteria underneath the old one he advised that if it wasn’t replaced the bacteria would eat away at the root . I didn’t have any discomfort of inflammation so had to take his word for it .
Im quite meticulous with brushing and flossing but some how there’s been a gap or something that’s allowed bacteria in .

The temporary crown was fine , but this permanant one is so sensitive I can’t get the toothbrush around it without experiencing a jolt of pain
I’ve even tried a soft nornal toothbrush but I hate touching it now . The dentist didn’t give any advice apart from it might feel uncomfortable for a couple of days and to take the usual ibuprofen.

Ive been swishing warm salt water around it .

Everybody's different, but I had a permanent crown placed two days ago. Was a bit sore that day and the next, but today I can hardly feel it.
Is the bite comfortable? If it's hitting in the wrong place when you bite down that could cause soreness. They can fix that.
Did you have an anaesthetic injection? That area could be sore.
Is there any after-hours coverage at the practice? Maybe you could tell them what's going on.
Hope clears up for you, OP.

It shouldn't be as painful as you're describing I don't think. Sounds like it may have been fitted slightly incorrectly (pushing on, or not adequately covering, a sensitive area of your tooth). It seems likely you'll need to go back to the dentist.

No, that is not normal. I've got three crowns and never had any of that type of pain, in fact it always felt better after the crown was fitted rather than worse. It might feel vaguely sensitive for a few days, but not in the way you're describing. You need to go back to your dentist.

Hi , I can’t brush around the gum line it feels like the brush is hitting a nerve . I can’t chew on that side either other than that if left alone no pain

I wouldnt mind but I’ve got anxiety going to the dentist and the thought of going back and possibly having the crown taken off fills me with dread
