Irritable Hip? How irritating is it - and for how long?

twentypence · 10/06/2008 10:38

I mean picking up my 20kg 5 year old to take him to the toilet and back to bed may get old really quite quick.

Tell me he'll get better as quick as he lost the ability to walk.

I didn't want this not to get noticed.

My dd2 has Perthe's Disease, which causes her to limp and gives her a lot of pain in her hip at the moment, as well as it giving way under her sometimes. They thought it was irritable hip but its not, obv.

She is 4 and a half and really heavy, but can walk around the house.

If you want to chat about it just ask though, as its interesting to meet someone else with hip problems in their kid.

Hope someone can come come along who can answer more specifically.

Is this a post cold thing?

DS2 has had it twice. Each time it was about 2 days.

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 10/06/2008 15:53

Although he could walk again after the first day (and second time round it wasn't as bad).

summer111 · 10/06/2008 16:04

ds had it when he was 4 after a really heavy headcold - resulting in him being hospitalised for three days 'til they diagnosed what it was..this is a child who is extremely active and as a result of his irritable hip, he literally screamed if his leg was moved at all. He was on anti-inflammatories and calpol for the duration. Fortunatley on the morning of the third day in hospital, he woke up and could walk again...
Hope that helps!

scaryteacher · 10/06/2008 16:18

ds has had similar since he was 5 (now 12). It flares up when he has a growth spurt. We finally got them to look at him in Brussels and they think that for him the problem is that his bones are growing quicker than his muscles and tendons. He had x-rays to rule out problems with his hip joint, and then had 19 sessions of physio to help him. He also had severe bilateral talipes when he was born, so I don't know if that had a knock-on effect either.

I find a warm bath helps as does calpol.

I also sometimes find the irritable hip is worse if it's a cross country day!

twentypence · 10/06/2008 20:02

Thanks for that. The Doctors at the hospital ruled out Perthes disease as he did get slightly better during his observation in the hospital. He didn't have a fever and there was nothing in his bloods to suggest an infection, but he was nil by mouth for a bit just in case.

sorry to hear about your son's painful hip. Irritable hip possible - but I would want to be sure Drs fully investigated liklihood of Perthes - did he have Xrays? Main thing is if he doesn't improve, continues to have limp and/or pain - even if it comes and goes - make sure you take him back. Hopefully with irritable hip after few days completely goes

twentypence · 11/06/2008 00:28

They did Xrays and also took blood. He is getting better, and has a follow up at the hospital on Friday.

He has had a couple of unexplained limps in the past which have resolved on their own. But this is the first time he has complained about pain.

poor old DS (and you obviously)

coincidentally am just back from docs with DD who now has to take antibiotics for 10 days for a throat infection and is also complaining of sore knees and 'bottom' (I think she actually means hip) which I@m to keep an eye on to partic. to see if her knee goes hot/red. she also has swollen glands in her neck and stomach.

did they think it from a virus going round or anything?

getting up for 1-2 15-30 min screaming sessions in the night is REALLY old

twentypence · 11/06/2008 01:25

His was explained as post viral. But we totally missed the virus! Sore knees were explained as refered pain from the hips.

interesting
I shall keep a very close eye on her just in case...hope DS is on the mend and fully better soon

Ds had this (transient synovitis) when he was 5 and one relapse about 6 months later. He has had nothing since and he's 7.5. Did doctor tell you to give regular doses of ibuprofen? That's what we were told and it really did sort out the pain.

twentypence · 11/06/2008 05:05

He isn't in pain any more. He has a massive tolerance for pain - so it was as well that he couldn't actually walk because that was taken seriously. I'll give him some more ibuprofen before bed.

How long did you keep your ds off school?

OP posts:
SofiaAmes · 11/06/2008 07:44

Ds' was post viral too and it was such a non-event cold in the first place that we barely realized he had one. The hip going out happened when we were visiting my parents over a long weekend (and literally during the 3 days that his medical notes were in the mail between the old pediatrician and the new one)! So, I don't think he missed more than a day or so of school. I just gave teacher instructions that he wasn't to run at recess and had to sit and read instead.
The ibuprofen is partially for the pain, but also to reduce the inflammation, so you should continue for a week or so, I think.

twentypence · 11/06/2008 07:57

Excellent - He is such a box of birds that I am tempted to send him to school tomorrow - but he still has quite a pronounced limp, especially this evening when he is tired.

How long did you keep him reading at breaktime. Ds will absolutely love being able to do this!

DS1 was off school for 3 days. He couldn't walk at all the first day and A&E said he needed to rest for 2 more.

As soon as he went back it was back to normal.

DS1's cold was really mild as well. And he started with knee pain. I thought he was putting it on as one minute he was saying knee, then hip then I really had no idea what was going on when he couldn't stand.

twentypence · 11/06/2008 11:16

Isn't it funny that they are all mild colds, and then you end up with a child that can't walk. I'll never curse a snotty nose again.

OP posts:
SofiaAmes · 11/06/2008 14:40

I think I left it a week that he had to read at break (and pe). I think the doctor said a day or two, but I wanted to make sure it was really gone!

Hi my son has iritable hip or so the hospital say, he has had hip pain in his left hip for over 3 months now, it started on 4 feb this year and it came on all of a sudden, he had no illness or injury, he had ultra sound that showed fluid, he had 2 nights in hospital then home for rest and pain relief. 2 weeks later he was still no better so gp sent him back to hospital where he was in for a week, they did x rays and bloods and mri scan which all came back clear, he has got worse over the last few months and can now barley walk on his left leg at all as is in so much pain.. he has falls at school as he now uses crutches to help him walk, then he was addmitted 2 weeks ago just over night but when they did x ray the peadactric doctor said she was no expert but said there is something on the scan that looks like the starst of perthes disease, the next day the bone docs turned round and said there was not enough evidence for this, he then had an mri scan again last tues and we got the results today and they said he is all clear which is good, so now they have turned round and said it is iritable hip and there is nothing more they can do for him, and made an appoitment for him to go in 8 weeks.i dont understand how he can say it is iritable hip and he told me it can last up to 6 months, but all the reasearch i have seen on here says it only last for 1 to 2 weeks not 1 to 6 months, just wondered if anyone could help on this matter or have any advice on what to do next.
