vaccinations and asthma

I've started a new thread as the old one has become a bit lost and long.

I want to discuss the link that sophable mentioned between vaccinations and asthma and what if any research has been done on it.

Ds is well overdue for his 3rd DTP and Hep B (given to babies as standard here) and is probably asthmatic. As it goes, he would probably be asthmatic anyway as dh, his grandfather and maternal uncles are all asthmatic. But I'm interested anyway.

Please only post links by the way, not long quotes. Find it easier to follow then.

My own current view (based on general reading and experience) is that the rise in asthma is caused by overuse of household antibacterial agents rather than vaccinations but I can be persuaded. Perhaps it's a combination of both.

Ah that's interestng leahbump- about reacting to temp- as he does cough when changing from warm to cold especially, but also the other way round.

Also interesting about formula feeding mears as he had a lot more formula than ds1 in the early days (although was breast fed until over 2- eek). Although he was definitely puffy from the day he was born-- had terrible trouble with him in hospital (not compared to scbu babies- just seemed like a nightmare to me) Unfortunately ds3 is having to be mix fed as well

SP, my ds was diagnosed with asthma just before his 2nd birthday. He didn't have any vaccinations at all until he was 3 so it is definately not related in our case. He was also breastfed, and there's no history of asthma in the immediate family.

We also just use environmentally friendly cleaning products, so that theory doesn't seem to fit for our case either. One newspaper article that I read said also mentioned DIY products as well as cleaning products and since dh was decorating our house whilst I was pregnant ds was exposed to lots of those before he was born.

The only other thing that seems like a possible link to me is antibiotics. I had them very early on in pregnancy and ds had them when he was a few months old. I did read some research that found children were more susceptible to asthma, allergies and eczema ( all of which ds has) if they'd had antibiotics at a very early age. I'm sure there is a genetic element too though.

Jimjams - temperature differences both ways are a common trigger for asthma. My cousin had a fatal attack on entering a warm shop one christmas. She's forgotten her inhaler.(this is why I'm a bit obsessive about asthma.)

Leah - where do you live? My other theory is crop sprays: dh's asthma was always worse in (West) Norfolk than in Brighton and they spray the big fields heavily there. There is also less industry in brighton I guess.

Also agree about breastfeeding, but ds was breastfed exclusively till 5 months, and still is breastfed 3 times a day (at 12 months) - desperately wanted to give up but the asthma thing kept me going. Even though I knew he would probably be asthmatic anyway.
