Hi Im just wondering how long it took you to recover from pneumonia.
Ive not been in hospital with it, just diagnosed after a visit to A&E.
Im on day 4 out of 5 of antibiotics.
i have felt rough for two weeks now, originally starting with the worst flu I have ever had!

I was a full month plus of exhaustion/weakness, but I did need two different lots of antibiotics to clear it.
Rest as much as you can!

Sorry at least six weeks maybe more. I was in hospital for a couple of days.

I also got pneumonia from the flu. Spent 5 nights in hospital before discharging myself. Took me months to not feel so weak. Dh wasn't keen for me to even leave the house for a good 6 weeks as I was so lightheaded. I had a collapsed lung and sepsis at the same time though so that may have stalled my recovery.

Hope you're feeling better very soon

It can vary.
Several months in my case.
A close friend who was a fit athletic type was off work six months.

Was in hospital for eight days, some on a ventilator and it was at least six weeks before I confidently went out. And a couple of weeks after that that I didn’t crash out as soon as I got in.

I've had pneumonia 4 times, and it really can vary. The first 2 times, it cleared up really well with antibiotics, but I did have a lingering dry cough, the kind that made your eyes water and trying to stifle would just make you cough more, the last 2 times I have ended up with stints in hospital, been on 3 courses of antibiotics that made me feel more poorly than the pneumonia. I've never felt so close to death.

All of the times, I have had lingering effects that have gone on months to over a year, along with extreme fatigue.

A month before making even a sandwich was possible without exhaustion
2 months to be back to normal

khaa2091 · 06/12/2025 15:10

I was always taught a week for each decade +2 to get back to normal.

stevegrabshall · 06/12/2025 15:16

I was hospitalised. It took 6 months to fully recover.

Thanks everyone, I think it’s the pain in my chest and upper back, that’s worse at the moment, just can’t seem to shift that.

Had pneumonia last Xmas. 2 lots of antibiotics and I wasn't up and about until the end of January. It's awful, you have my sympathies x

Even though pain is normal, if it is unbearable please speak to your doctor. They might want to check it out and review any medication.

I was originally given 1 week of antibiotics but it was clear by day 5 that as the pain was getting worse, and I was still coughing up blood and the dirtiest coloured phlegm that a sputum test needed doing to make sure I could get the right sort of antibiotics as well as some effective pain relief.

Thanks everyone Im definitely feeling better than this time last week, although this morning woke with a banging headache and a nose full of blood, so I think my sinuses are infected now!!
