Lump on neck?

Marvelfan300 · 05/12/2025 21:12

Has anyone experienced this? I have a raised lump on right side of neck appeared suddenly quite tender to touch and it’s radiating headaches I do have a reduced appetite because I’m feeling nauseous and going hot and cold every now and again - I did have a IV IRON INFUSION on Tuesday. I had it looked by a nurse today who just prescribed me some codeine for my pain in the neck but when having a shower this evening I’ve noticed pain at the back of my head and a smaller lump just lower to the one in my neck.

im trying not to worry

If it’s squishy and like a rugby ball, it’s probably a lymph node, although I have a permanent hard one after a bout of glandular fever many years ago

I have had swollen occipital lymph nodes twice, I had a scalp infection both times. They were quite tender.

I’ve attached a photo - it feels hard to touch the nurse said it was moveable but I can’t tell if it’s moving or not.

im just abit worried as I have no other symptoms and how it’s appeared - I did have enlarged lymph where it is for about 18yeats never bothered me but past 48hours it’s swollen and become very painful

I think it's probably raised lymph nodes as well. It looks in the right place. Randomly I also had an iron infusion on Tues and have felt pretty dreadful and fluey since, so I expect its connected to that and hopefully settle down soon hopefully.

I have ferritin of 5 apparently and they said I cannot have tablets as I’d require a faster dose through IV ever since I feel like I’m more fatigued/headache than I was with the low iron itself which they still don’t know how it’s happened😔 maybe this is caused by the IV then, the nurse today said it’s not a normal side effect but maybe it is!

111 for advice? Did they give you a leaflet about after care post the IV?

the lump may need further follow up - if worried about symptoms phone 111 - I think flu type symptoms are normal post Iv iron - this is from a private hospital leaflet post IV iron care -
Possible Side Effects Post Infusion
It is common for many people to develop a Post Infusion Flu, this affects about 1 in 4 people. This develops about 24 hours later and can be like a bad flu with aches and pains, feeling unwell and a mild temperature. We are not sure why this occurs and termed a ‘serum sickness’. It is self-limiting and can last up to a week. It important to keep well hydrated and take normal painkillers from the
chemist if required. With some preparations of IV iron, a fall in blood levels of Phosphate can occur in half of patients several weeks after the infusion. This appears to be an incidental laboratory finding in most cases
and not related to patient symptoms. However, it has been reported to be a problem in people requiring repeat infusions (e.g. patients with Inflammatory bowel disease requiring 5-10 infusions
p.a.). If you have any concerns please discuss this with your doctor

I got no leaflet I was only told I’ll have a headache and to take some paracetamol other than that I should have no concern. So I’m not really sure ever since I’ve had it I felt like I’ve been hit by a truck just trying to figure out where it’s come from 🥴
