Tranexamic acid - worried to take them

Lemonbaytree · 04/12/2025 17:42

I have been given Tranexamic acid and I have taken two doses already but I'm nervous about that it can cause blood clots. I'm tempted to just not take them.
They are for heavy bleeding during my periods.

They are also way too big for me to swallow and I have been cutting them in half, even though it says not too. Even as half it hurts to swallow!

Has anyone else been on these?

My 16yr old DD has been taking them.for a year to reduce her heavy periods, she hasn't had any trouble with them at all.

Zoraflora · 04/12/2025 17:48

They were a game changer for me as my periods were extremely heavy and frequent.

luckylavender · 04/12/2025 17:49

I had no side effects but they did no good for me

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 04/12/2025 17:52

Maybe even two doses are enough? Or is something you use every single period? I use it only when it goes mental…

Thanks. It's the first time I've tried them to be honest so I wouldn't know yet.

Oh I'm sorry to hear that.

It was the Mirena coil & sage tablets that saved my sanity

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 04/12/2025 19:11

Ok, in that case give it a go. It helped me so much, however whilst the gp said that I might need three per day or something like that, even one helped slow down the flow to a normal one and that was enough for me.

Same here.

i ended up getting Mirena coil which was great!

TryOnATeaCosy · 04/12/2025 19:14

They’re a godsend. I had horrendous endo and they gave me so much peace of mind, and enabled me to leave the house.

I think I have a copper coil (10year one) so I guess they act differently?

When you say they can cause blood clots - is this because Youve read the brochure?

Try comparing it to the brochure that comes with the paracetamol you knock back without thinking. Except these might make a real difference.

MrsMiagi · 04/12/2025 19:35

Been taking them for several years. They enable me to keep my job! Sounds dramatic but i'd not be able to leave the house otherwise.

TheLittleGreenFairy · 04/12/2025 20:02

They can really help if the bleeding is bad. Heavy bleeding has an impact on your body too.

user1477249785 · 04/12/2025 20:14

Made no difference to me but the mirena was a total game changer.

Lemonbaytree · 04/12/2025 20:15

Thank you, I definitely need them as my ferritin is ridiculously low which I'm now on Iron tablets (again!). I'll keep up with them and see how I go.

Copper coil can lead to heavier periods. Merina IUD has a synthetic progesterone in it and can lead to either lighter periods, or in some cases stops the bleed totally after a few months (but you may still get mood swings, sore boobs etc as it doesn't always stop your cycle, just the build up of the uterine lining).

But hormonal contraception isn't right for everyone.

Yes I took them during the menopause for heavy bleeding. They are really safe and I am now in my 60s and I suffered no adverse effects. All drugs have contra indications even paracetamol which everyone takes. They helped me and wouldn’t have coped without them.

Mariocatgran · 04/12/2025 20:55

Therw great they do they job pretty quickly

you take them before you’re due on and during your period, I am prescribed 6 a day but now they worsen headaches so I’ve booked a phone appointment to discuss. they do lighten the bleeding if you start a few days ahead

Anoninsomniac · 04/12/2025 22:04

I take 3 a day for 4 days from day 1 of my period as prescribed by the GP as my ferritin is low, its definitely better than nothing and I cant do hormones.

I guess everyone is different. I have normal tending to heavy periods but once in a blue moon I am bleeding out so I take at hoc when it happens.

OP, I hope it is useful for you. For me it really was. I was once hospitalized because my blood results were so bad they wanted to make sure I was not in danger and since having that box in my medicine cabinet it never happened again.

NuffSaidSam · 04/12/2025 22:17

I couldn't swallow them either. I crushed and took with yoghurt. That worked fine. My GP told me to drink lots of water and keep moving to lessen the chances of blood clots. They worked really well for me.

GlasgowGal2014 · 04/12/2025 22:44

Tranexamic acid was a total game changer for me. Two years ago my periods were horrendous - they lasted about a week I had serious flooding that made it difficult to leave the house for days. My HB and ferritin levels were really low and I was exhausted, sore and miserable all the time. I take two tranexamic acid three times a day during my heaviest days and my periods are much lighter and also shorter. I take spatone supplements and my HB and ferritin levels are at the lower end of normal and I feel like I have gotten my life back. Even the aches and pains are much reduced - I think low ferritin really reduced my pain threshold. If your periods are making your life difficult I would really recommend trying it.

beAsensible1 · 04/12/2025 22:48

I had them and was fine did they period blood clots?

what is the percentage of users that have experienced serious side effects?

I know 4 people who’ve used it at some point all fine or it didn’t work and they moved to mefenamic
